5 Little Monsters: Crocheted Football Helmet Hats- Free Pattern

Crocheted Football Helmet Hats- Free Pattern

A couple of years ago I made a hat for each of my kids for Christmas. I found lots of cute ideas for babies and for girls but I had a really hard time finding something for my oldest son that wasn't too babyish or just really plain and not very fun. In our family we are big University of Utah fans and he was just starting to get interested in football so I came up with the idea to make a hat to look like a football helmet. That hat is the red one in the pictures. It is a couple years old now and after getting stuck to the velcro on his coat several times it is definitely showing some wear. I thought it would be fun to figure out how to make it in different sizes and post the pattern.

Football season is starting in the next week or so, I think the Utes play their first game a week from today, and though the weather is still warm it will be cooling off soon so I thought it would be a good time to share this pattern.

I made it in 6 different sizes, newborn-child (I would say about 8 years old). I made one with a BYU logo just to show how it would look with a different team. Also, I know that this is not the logo that the Utes actually have on their helmets, if you would like to attempt to cut out and sew on a drum and feather logo feel free, I opted to go the easier route and made the block U. Much simpler and I think it is still easily recognized as the U. If I were to make the BYU one again I would do it a little differently for the same reason. I think it would look better to cut a blue oval and a white Y and sew that on the blue oval. I cut the Y out of the blue and wasn't thrilled with how it turned out. The logos are cut out of felt and sewn on with a simple running stitch.

I originally came up with the idea because I needed something for a boy but I thought it could be cute for a little girl too so I made one in pink. I thought it turned out cute and my daughter liked it quite a bit. It matched her pink jersey perfectly.
