5 Little Monsters: Crocheted Monster Pencil Bag

Crocheted Monster Pencil Bag

Last week I shared my basic crocheted pencil bag and mentioned that there would be some fun variations over the next few weeks. Today I am sharing the first of those variations, the Crocheted Monster Pencil Bag. I figured a monster was appropriate since my blog is called 5 Little Monsters.

This was one of the first ideas that I came up with to make using my pencil bag pattern so I actually made the basic pencil bag with the intention of turning it into a monster. The green bag part is the same one that is pictured in my basic bag post, I just added the spikes, eyes, and teeth.

Because the main bag is made exactly the same as the basic bag, I am not going to rewrite that pattern on this post. I will just refer you to that post for the bag and then in this post I will explain how to make the monster pieces and how to put it all together.

How To Make the Crocheted Monster Pencil Bag

Approximately 9 inches x 5 inches

You will need:

  • worsted Weight yarn in main color for the bag (I used Vanna's Choice Radiant Lime)
  • worsted weight yarn in contrasting color for spikes (I used Vanna's Choice Aqua)
  • small amount of worsted weight yarn in black and white for eyes and mouth
  • H crochet hook
  • 2 buttons (3/4 - 1 inch)
  • yarn needle
  • scissors

Instructions:

Begin by making a basic bag in your main color- get pattern HERE

Round 2: change to colored yarn, 2 sc in each stitch (16 sc)
Round 3: change to white, [sc in first stitch, 2 sc in next stitch] repeat around (24 sc)
Leave long end for sewing

 Spikes:

Round 1: ch 1, 4 sc in magic ring (4 sc)
Round 2: 3 sc in first stitch, 1 sc, 3 sc in next, 1 sc (8 sc)
Round 3: 1 sc, 2 sc in next, 1 sc in next 3 stitches, 2 sc in next, 1 sc in next 2 (10 sc)
Round 4: 1 sc in first 2 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 4 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 2 stitches (12 sc)
Round 5: 1 sc in first 2 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 5 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 3 stitches (14 sc)
Round 6: 1 sc in first 3 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 6 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 3 stitches (16 sc)
Round 7: 1 sc in first 4 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 7 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 3 stitches (18 sc)
Leave long tail for sewing

Sew eyes and mouth onto front of bag. Sew the spikes onto the top of the bag, along the top edge where the flap folds over. Be sure to sew through both layers of the spikes.

A few little crocheted embellishments and you have transformed a plain bag into a fun monster.

Just fill it up with pens, pencils, markers, whatever you want. This little monster is perfect to take back to school filled with all of your little guy's supplies.

Stay tuned for some more variations on the basic bag pattern soon.

    1. After I first read your comment I went and looked for yours to see what it looked like. I have not been brave enough to try a zipper in my crochet yet. one of these days I will have to try it.
