Last week I got a box in the mail from Red Heart Yarn with some new yarn to try out. My girls were really excited when I opened the box and they saw the colors so I knew that one of them was going to be getting something made from it. I decided on a quick hat and scarf set that is a preschooler size. It is made to fit my almost 4 year old. The yarn is really thick which means it works up really fast, I love that part. I used the largest hook that I had, an N, which is what the yarn label recommended but I kind of wished I had a size bigger, especially for the scarf because it just seemed a little stiffer than I would have liked.
The colors were really bright and fun, this yarn comes in 3 types that you can mix and match. There are solid colors, mine was bright pink (colorway: Pink), prints, mine was a mix of bright pinks, purples, blues and greens (colorway: Party Print), and swirl which is a textured yarn, mine was a blue and pink combo (colorway: Party). I wanted to use all of the yarns in my project, the scarf uses all 3 but for the hat I mainly used only the solid and print yarn, the swirl was only used to make a pom pom for the top of the hat. I was able to make both the hat and the scarf from the 3 skeins of yarn I was sent and I still have most of the skein of swirl leftover. However, I literally have inches left of the other two so if you want to make the set you may need more than one skein of the solid and print. If I had cut one of the ends a little longer or crocheted just a tad looser I would not have had enough to finish. Just something to think about if you are buying yarn for this project. Also, I preferred working with the solid and print yarn vs. the swirl yarn which is why I used more of them. There is nothing wrong with the yarn, I am just not a fan of working with super textured yarns. I think they are more difficult to see where to put your hook. That is also the reason why I used a more open stitch when I was using that yarn. That is just my personal preference, I know some people who really like working with that type of yarn. I thought it was a fun accent but I didn't want to crochet the whole project with it. This was a really fun, quick crochet project.
How to make the Silly Stripes Hat & Scarf Set
Scarf
Finished size: about 54" long x 6" wide
You will need:
- 1 skein each (you will not use the entire skein) of Red Heart Mixology Solid, Print, and Swirl
- N crochet hook
- yarn needle
Instructions:
start with print yarn
ch 13
Row 1: skip first 4 ch (first 3 count as dc), [dc, ch1, dc] in next ch, skip 2 ch, [dc, ch 1, dc] in next ch, skip 2 ch, [dc, ch 1, dc] in next ch, skip 1 ch, dc in last ch
Row 2: ch 3 (counts as first dc), [dc, ch 1, dc] in ch space, repeat in next 2 ch spaces, dc in last stitch (top of beginning ch 3)
Row 3: repeat row 2, at the end of row change to solid yarn
Row 4: ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in each dc and ch space across (11 dc)
Row 5: ch 3, dc in each stitch, at the end of row change to swirl yarn (11 dc)
Row 6: ch 3, skip 1, [dc, ch 1, dc] in next, skip 2, [dc, ch 1, dc] in next, skip 2, [dc, ch 1, dc] in next, skip 1, dc in last stitch, change to solid yarn
Row 7: ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in each dc and ch space across (11 dc)
Row 8: ch 3, dc in each stitch, at the end of row change to print yarn (11 dc)
Continue repeating those 8 rows for the pattern until desired length is reached, then repeat rows 1-3 one more time, I repeated rows 1-8 5 more times, then 1-3 once more
Finish off and weave in all ends
Hat
You will need:
- 1 skein each (you will not use the entire skein) of Red Heart Mixology Solid, Print, and Swirl
- N crochet hook
- yarn needle
Instructions:
start with print yarn
Round 1: in mr, ch 2, 10 dc, change to solid, slip stitch to first dc (10 dc)
Round 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each stitch, change to print, slip stitch to first dc (20 dc)
Round 3: ch 2, [dc in first stitch, 2 dc in next] around, change to solid, slip stitch to first dc (30 dc)
Round 4: ch 2, [dc in first 4 stitches, 2 dc in next] around, change to print, slip stitch to first dc (36 dc)
Round 5: ch 2, dc in each stitch, change to solid, slip stitch to first dc (36 dc)
Round 6: ch 2, dc in each stitch, change to print, slip stitch to first dc (36 dc)
Round 7: ch 2, dc in each stitch, change to solid, slip stitch to first dc (36 dc)
Round 8: ch 1, sc in each stitch, slip stitch to first sc, finish off, weave in end (36 sc)
To make pom pom for the top: wrap swirl yarn around your fingers several times, you want a lot of wraps so you get a full pom pom (I actually wish I had wrapped mine more so it was a little fuller), pull off your fingers and tie tightly around the middle, cut the ends, fluff and trim, attach to top of hat
