My son is at the age where he is just starting to lose his teeth, he lost his first a couple of months ago and then just the other day he lost his second. When he lost his first tooth the tooth came out and then he lost it, literally, he couldn't find it to put it under his pillow. I showed him some pictures of tooth fairy pillows and told him that I could make him something like that to help him not lose the next one. Besides, the tooth fairy that comes to our house has always thought that taking a tooth out of a pocket and replacing it with money seems like it would be way easier than trying to dig around under their pillow to find a tiny little tooth while not waking them up. He liked the idea but I didn't really get around to it right away and kind of forgot about it until the other day when he announced that he had just pulled out tooth number two. It was actually right around bedtime that he reminded me that I said that I would make him a tooth fairy pillow and that he needed it right now. I brought him in my sewing room and together we came up with a really easy design that I could make quickly and he picked out colors and everything. Not too long after that he had a little tooth fairy pillow to stick his newly lost tooth in and he was ready to go to bed.

Because I was looking for something really quick I thought Oly-Fun would be a perfect solution. It was nice because I had a lot of colors for him to choose from and because it doesn't fray or anything I didn't need to finish any edges. It was really easy and only took a few minutes to make and he was happy and ready to go to bed. He was even happier when he woke up the next morning with a dollar in the little pocket of his pillow.

I used my Cricut to cut out the tooth shape for the pocket and the letters for his name. I will link to the file I used to cut the tooth. If you don't have a Cricut it is a simple enough shape that you could easily cut it by hand or if you don't want to do that you could even just cut a square pocket.

Luckily Jak has a short name so it was pretty easy to add his name, I chose a thick, blocky font so that it would be easy to sew around, if your child's name is longer you may have to choose a smaller font in order to fit the name. I also tried just gluing the name on first, hoping that that would be enough and I wouldn't have to sew it. I know some people have had success with that and if you are making it a little further in advance that may work. I felt like it wasn't sticking well enough for me but I also wanted it ready right away and didn't really give it a lot of time to dry. If you glued down the letters and then gave it plenty of time to dry before messing with it again you may be able to get away without sewing them down.

How to Make an Easy Oly-Fun Tooth Fairy Pillow

Finished size- 8 1/2" x 5 1/2"

You will need:

  • Oly-Fun in 3 colors, main color for pillow (cherry pop), contrasting color for name (gold), and white for tooth pocket (snow white)- I used the craft packs because that is what I had on hand but you only need a small amount so the craft sheets would also work
  • Cricut or other cutting machine- optional
  • Design Space File for tooth (if using a Cricut)
  • Polyfil
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Scissors, Rotary Cutter, Ruler, Mat
  • Glue

Instructions:

First you will want to cut out all of your pieces.

Cut 2- 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" rectangles from main color.

Cut 2 tooth pockets from white (you could cut only one but it will be a little more see through so I chose to double it up and cut 2). My tooth was about 4 inches square.

Cut name to fit in the space that is left, about 4 inches.

Sew the two tooth pieces together stitching very close to the edge. Then place on one of the rectangles leaving at least 1/2" on each side and pin in place. Sew down, stitching over the previous stitching line, leaving the top open to create the pocket.

Glue the letters in place on the other side of the pillow and either leave so that the glue can dry and set or stitch the letters in place.

Place the two rectangles together, wrong sides together and stitch around the edge with a 1/4" seam allowance, leaving an opening of at least a couple of inches on one side for stuffing.

Stuff pillow.

Sew opening closed.

And that's it, like I said, super quick and easy.

Jak picked the colors that he wanted but Oly-Fun comes in such a huge variety of colors that you can make it in whatever colors your child likes. It is also really inexpensive so it hardly costs anything to make a project like this. And the project is simple enough that it would be really easy to change up and customize in any way you want. If you don't want to add the name you could just make it into a square with the tooth on it, if you want a handle so that it can hang just sew a ribbon or strip of Oly-Fun into the top seam. You could make the pocket a different shape or just change up the colors. Whatever you want.
