Universal Pacifier Clip

We just had our new baby last week and leading up to his birth I made quite a few little baby things for him, some I have posted about and some I haven't. I mostly made things like receiving blankets, swaddle blankets, and onesies. A blogging friend of mine made me a couple of pacifier clips and sent them to me. You can see how to make her version here.

That was something that I hadn't really thought about because not all of my kids have been pacifier users but so far this baby likes his binky. The clips my friend made worked well for the type of pacifiers that she sent but we had a couple different types to try out including the Soothie pacifiers that they have at the hospital. Those ones, along with some other brands, don't have a big place to put something through, they just have a couple of small holes. They other kids all think that the baby needs his binky all the time so they brought out the clips for him to try. It was really nice to have that binky attached so that when he spit it out it didn't fall to the floor. I decided that I needed to make some that would fit any of the different styles of pacifiers so that whichever kind he ended up preferring, so far he will take anything we put in his mouth, we will be able to clip it to him.

To make a more universal pacifier clip I wanted it to have a small loop that could hook through the holes. You could use a thin ribbon or elastic. I went with some thin, flat elastic because I happened to have some in my stash that would work. Another thing that would work well are some thin hair elastics. The elastic I used was probably 3/16" and I wouldn't go any wider than that because it barely fit through the holes.

This clip is really simple to make all you need is a little scrap of fabric, some fusible interfacing, a suspender/mitten clip, and the elastic or whatever you are using for your loop. In a couple of minutes you can have a pacifier clip. They are easy enough to make that you could easily make several to have on hand for baby gifts.

How To Make a Universal Pacifier Clip

You will need:

• scrap of fabric at least 2 1/2" x 9"
• Structure fusible interfacing same size as fabric
• thin elastic or ribbon, about 4"
• suspender/mitten clip
• coordinating thread
• rotary cutter, mat, ruler, and scissors
• sewing machine
• iron

Instructions:

Cut the fabric to 2 1/2" x 9". Cut interfacing the same size.

Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of fabric.

Fold fabric in half right sides together. Fold elastic or ribbon in half and place in the center of one of the short edges. You will want to place it with the loop towards the inside and with the cut ends sticking out of the seam. You will also want to place it so that it is centered between the folded edge and 1/4" from the other edge to account for the seam allowance. 

Sew a 1/4" seam along that short edge and the long edge, leaving the other short edge open for turning. Clip corners, turn right side out and press. 

Pull the unfinished end through the clip and fold twice, about 1/2"-3/4" each time, to enclose the raw edge. Stitch over the folded portion to secure. I sewed a rectangle and then an x in the center. I also sewed a line of topstitching across the top to make sure the elastic loop was extra secure. 

That's it, super simple. Then just thread the loop through the holes in your pacifier, put the clip through the loop and pull it all the way through. It should fit on just about any type of pacifier and hopefully keep them clean and easy to find.
