This time of year I always start thinking about school supplies, not just for the kids though. It is also the time I pick up things for the kids to use at home, like crayons and markers, and for myself, for my office, like notebooks and pens. Every thing is on sale this time of year and there are so many options available that it is the perfect time to stock up.
Ever since I was a kid I have loved colorful pens. I am a doodler and a list maker and I love making my list bright and colorful. I like to be able to use different colors to organize my calendar, one color for blog stuff that I need to do, another for stuff I need to do around the house, a color for kids activities, etc. Or even one color for each person so that I know what everyone has going on. I have started doing more and more of that digitally but there is just something about writing stuff down that helps me remember. Also, I have idea notebooks where I like to scribble down my ideas for future projects and I love using colors for those too.
My daughter loved the design on the barrels and immediately wanted to claim the pens for herself. I decided to crochet a little pencil bag type pouch to keep them in so that I could keep them away from the kids and keep them all together so I can find them when I need them. I used my basic pencil bag pattern but changed it up by adding stripes instead of making it in just one color.
The pouch is made completely in single crochet and is a pretty simple pattern, 2 buttons on the back keep the flap closed and the pens securely inside.
How to Crochet a Striped Pen Pouch
You will need:
- Worsted Weight yarn in 2 colors
- H crochet hook

- Sewing thread for attaching buttons
- sewing needle
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
Instructions:
You will be changing colors every 2 rows on the body of the bag, you can carry the yarn up the side of the bag rather than cutting it each time

You should now have a piece that looks like this:
A big rectangle that is slightly angled in on one end
Rows 1-18 will be the back of your bag, rows 19-36 will be the front of your bag and rows 37-43 (the last two straight rows and the angled portion) make the flap.
Fold the bag wrong sides together (the sides look pretty much the same so whichever way you think looks better) so that the first 18 rows are on one side and match up with rows 19-36. Your stripes should match colors when it is folded because you will fold in the middle of the 4 white rows.
Starting in one corner, I always start so that I am working on the front of the bag, sc up the side of the bag through both layers, once you reach the end of the double layers sc in the next two rows and continue up the angled portion, sc in corner stitch, ch 4, skip 1, sc in next 14, ch 4, skip 1, sc in corner, sc down the side of the flap and bag making sure to go through both layers once you reach the bag portion, finish off and weave in ends
Fold flap down to determine button placement, sew on buttons. Then all that is left to do is head to Walmart to buy some colorful new pens to fill your cute new pouch.
