I decided to go with a basic double crochet hat, then added some ribbing around the bottom in a contrasting color with monkey ears sewn on the side. It is a pretty quick and easy project and he loved it.
I think little animal or character hats can be so fun for little kids and they can be pretty simple to make. I have made so many hats for my kids and the most loved are always the animal hats or hats that look like their favorite characters.

Ears-
You will make 4 ears the same way, 2 of the lighter tan color and 2 brown. Then you will place one of each color together and crochet around the edge to make each ear. Make the tan ears first so that when you make the brown ears you can just place the tan ear on top and continue to crochet around without cutting the yarn. The ears are worked into a magic ring but instead of joining rounds to make a circle you will turn at the end of each row to make a semicircle shape.
Make 2 tan:
begin with magic ring
Row 1: in mr, ch 2, 7 dc (7 dc)
Row 2: ch 1, turn, 2 sc in each stitch (14 dc)
Finish off, cut yarn, weave in ends
Make 2 brown:
Follow pattern for tan ear but do not finish off after round 2
ch 1, turn, place a tan ear on top of a brown ear and sc around working 1 sc in each stitch and going through both layers of the ear
Finish off, cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing
Stitch the ears to the side of the hat about 1 row above the ribbing edge.
