Newborn baby hats are a super quick project and they are great to have on hand for baby gifts or to donate to hospitals or other charities. Today I am sharing a couple different versions of a really basic hat in newborn size.
These hats are made with a medium (#4) weight yarn, which seems to be the yarn people have the most of in their stash. They don't take a lot of yarn so they are perfect for using up leftover balls of yarn. I used a self-striping yarn on a couple of the hats, but you could use up even smaller amounts of yarn by adding stripes or a contrast band around the bottom.
For this pattern I wanted to show a couple of really simple variations on a basic hat. You could just double crochet all the way down and it would still be cute but I like to add a little more interest to the band of the hat.
The other option is a simple single crochet edging. Rather than just working plain single crochet stitches around the bottom I worked them in the back loop only. This creates horizontal ridges along the bottom edge of the hat.
A newborn size hat should measure about 12" around, or 6" across when laid flat, and be 4 1/2"-5" tall from the crown to the bottom of the band.
