5 Little Monsters: Lacy Crocheted Angel Ornament

Lacy Crocheted Angel Ornament

This week I wanted to share some "Christmas in July" projects. It is crazy to think that Christmas is only 5 months away. Now is a great time to get started on Christmas projects, too often I end up waiting until November to get started and end up only finishing half of the things on my list.

It is nice to get an early start if you want to make lots of handmade gifts and decorations, or if you are making things items to sell at Christmastime.

I decided to start with a crocheted Christmas project so today I am sharing a simple crocheted Christmas ornament, a little lacy angel ornament. It is really quick to make, so it would be easy to make up a bunch for gifts or craft fairs.

I used a couple different yarns to make them. First I used a worsted weight white and it worked well but I wanted to try a little bit lighter weight yarn to see how that worked. So I made another using a #2, fine weight yarn (Vanna's Glamour, Diamond) and I think I preferred it out of that yarn. It was a little smaller than the first since it used thinner yarn and a smaller hook, which I liked. You could use any weight of yarn, just make sure to adjust your hook size too, and remember that it will change the finished size of your angel.

In addition to making an ornament to hang on your tree, it could also work as a tree topper for a small tree.

How to Crochet a Lacy Angel Ornament

Finished size:  6.5" with #4 yarn and G hook, 5.5" with #2 yarn and E hook

You will need:

  • Fine or Worsted Weight Yarn in White, or desired color (samples made with All Things You Essential Acrylic in White, and Vanna's Glamour in Diamond)
  • G or E Crochet Hook
  • Fiberfill
  • Heavy Thread (for hanging)
  • Scissors
  • Yarn Needle

Instructions:

For worsted (#4) weight yarn use a G hook

For Light (#3) weight yarn use an E hook

Rounds 1-7 create the angel's head
Round 2-11 make the wings
Round 12 creates the waist
Rounds 13-

If you use a different weight yarn adjust your hook size accordingly. You want the hook to be slightly smaller than recommended so the stitches on the head are nice and tight and doesn't have big gaps for the stuffing to show through.
