Unicorn Magic Headband

I have a little girl who is obsessed with Unicorns, and I think just about every little girl in her class at school is just as obsessed as she is. When I saw Unicorn Magic Snack Pack Pudding Cups at Walmart I knew she would love them as a treat. They will be especially fun with school starting soon for an after school snack. And to go along with the special unicorn puddings I made her a cute unicorn headband to wear.

I mean, when your pudding "tastes like joy and rainbow sparkles" and is made with "fairy dust and princess kisses" what 7 year old girl wouldn't want it. Dressing up like a unicorn and eating a unicorn snack will make any day extra magical. I have wanted to try crocheting a unicorn headband for a while. I made a unicorn hat a couple of years ago and my daughter wore it all the time so that she could be a unicorn. Hats are great when it is cold outside but not so nice during warmer times of the year. A few months ago she was given a unicorn headband as a gift when she was sick. She wore that thing everyday until it literally fell apart. 

I figured I could make something similar and probably even sturdier and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to do it. 

The headband is crocheted in a few separate pieces and then sewn together around a wide headband. Even though there is some sewing involved the pieces are small enough that it doesn't take too long to make all of the pieces and put it together. 

She loved it just as much as I hoped she would. 

How to Crochet a Unicorn Headband

You will need:

• Worsted weight yarn in white, pale yellow, light pink, and colors you want for the flowers (I used a bright pink and purple)
• G crochet hook
• small amount of stuffing
• Wide headband (the kind that are about 1" wide at the widest part, you just don't want the really skinny kind, I bought a 3 pack of fabric covered Goody brand at Walmart, the color is not too important since most of what will be seen will be covered with yarn)
• yarn needle
• scissors

Instructions:

Headband Base

Make the base for your headband out of white yarn. This is the part that will wrap around the headband and that you will sew all of the pieces on to. 

Ch 40

Row 1: hdc in 3rd ch from hook (turning ch does not count as a stitch), hdc in each ch to the end (38 hdc)

Row 2-5: ch 2, turn, hdc in each stitch (38 hdc)

Finish off and cut yarn leaving a very long tail for sewing. 

Unicorn Horn

Make the horn with pale yellow yarn, begin with a magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 4 sc (4sc)

Round 2: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next] repeat (6 sc)

Round 3: 1 sc in each stitch (6 sc)

Round 4: 1 sc in each stitch (6 sc)

Round 5: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 2] repeat (8 sc)

Round 6: 1 sc in each stitch (8 sc)

Round 7: 1 sc in each stitch (8 sc)

Round 8: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 3] repeat (10 sc)

Round 9: 1 sc in each stitch (10 sc)

Round 10: 1 sc in each stitch (10 sc)

Round 11: [2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 4] repeat (12 sc)

Round 12: 1 sc in each stitch (12 sc)

Round 13: 1 sc in each stitch (12 sc)

Round 14: 1 sc in each stitch (12 sc)

Round 15: 1 sc in each stitch (12 sc)

Round 16: 1 sc in each stitch (12 sc)

Finish off and leave long tail for sewing, stuff the horn

Ears

Make 4 ears, 2 white and 2 pink

ch 2 does not cound as a stitch

ch 8
Row 1: hdc in 3rd ch from hook and each ch to the end (6 hdc)
Row 2: ch 2, turn, hdc2tog, hdc in next 2, hdc2tog (4 hdc)

Row 3: ch 2, turn, hdc in each stitch (4 hdc)
Row 4: ch 2, turn, hdc2tog twice (2 hdc)
Row 5: ch 2, turn, hdc2tog (1 hdc)


finish off, cut yarn

place a pink triangle on top of a white triangle and with white yarn sc around the outside through both layers

Flowers

Rose (pink center flower)

ch 30
Row 1: sc in second ch from the hook, [ch 1, skip 1, sc in next] repeat to the end
Row 2: ch 1, turn, [sc in first stitch, hdc in next stitch, 3 dc in next stitch, hdc in next] repeat to the end

roll the flower and stitch in place, leave long tail for sewing

Purple Flowers

make 2

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc, sl st to first sc to join (6 sc)

Round 2: ch 1, sc in first stitch, ch 2, [sc in next st, ch 2] around, sl st to first sc to join (6 sc, 6 ch 2 loops)

Round 3: [sc, 3 dc, sc] in each ch loop, sl st to first sc to join (6 petals)

finish off leaving tail for sewing

Assembly

Wrap the white base pieces around the headband and using your tail stitch the long ends together to secure. 

Stitch the horn to the center of the headband.

Stitch the ears on each side of the horn. 

Stitch the flowers in front of the horn and ears, the rose in the center and the purple flowers on either side.

So cute and pretty quick to make.  Any unicorn loving little girl will love wearing this headband.
