Flower-Filled Pumpkin

A few days ago I shared how I transformed a dollar store foam pumpkin by wrapping it with yarn. The next thing I did with one of the other foam pumpkins that I bought was cut it open and fill it with flowers.

The pumpkins are hollow so I cut off the top, just like you would if you were carving a real pumpkin to clean it out. I filled the inside with some floral foam, and painted the outside.

I chose a rich gold color that I thought would work well with the fall colors of the flowers. I just picked up a few fake flowers at Dollar Tree while I was there buying the pumpkins. They didn't have a great selection, especially not of greens, but I grabbed some fall leaves and berries and mums in a few different fall colors.

It took a couple of coats of the Antique Gold paint to get a good coverage. Once it was dry I added the flowers. Flower arranging is not a talent of mine so I'm sure it could look better, and my daughter was trying to help me so she kept sticking things in wherever she wanted which also didn't help. But I worked on it until I was fairly happy with how it was arranged.

This was a super easy project, and could easily be made to match any decor. The pumpkin and flowers could be any color. The only part that takes a while is the painting, or more accurately letting the paint dry between coats.

How to Make a Flower Filled Pumpkin

You will need:

• a carvable foam pumpkin
• floral foam block
• assorted fall flowers and leaves
• Folkart Metallic in Antique Gold
• paintbrush
• knife (it doesn't need to be super sharp, I used a plastic knife)

Instructions:

Use a knife to cut a circle from the top of the pumpkin. There was a circular line around the stem, I cut around that line to get the top out. 

Place the floral foam inside of the pumpkin, you may need to cut it into pieces to get it to fit in the hole. 

Paint the pumpkin with gold paint (or any color you would like). It will likely take 2-3 coats to get good coverage over the foam. 

Once the paint is dry add the flowers into the foam, arranging to your liking.
