5 Little Monsters: V-Stitch Stripes Beanie

V-Stitch Stripes Beanie

Time for another hat pattern. I haven't been as quick at getting these up as I had hoped but this is the 3rd hat in the Variegated Yarn Friendly hat patterns. These are patterns that work well for using up that variegated yarn that you have in your stash that looked pretty in the skein when you bought it, but doesn't work up quite as well as you had hoped, or maybe you bought it for a specific project and have some leftover that you want to use up.

The idea for these hat patterns came after I bought a skein of colorful yarn for a small part of a project I was working on. When I went to the store to buy the yarn I was looking for specific colors and it turned out they only had the colors I needed in a jumbo size skein. I was already in the middle of the project and needed it to finish. I went ahead and bought the giant skein even though I only needed a tiny amount. I finished my project and had almost an entire jumbo skein leftover. I thought of what I could make with it and realized that sometimes it is hard to find patterns that work well with variegated yarn. At least I know it is not usually my favorite to work with.

One of my favorite ways to use variegated yarn is to separate it with other solid colors. This breaks up the colors so it doesn't look quite as messy. That is the technique I have chosen to use with these patterns. All of them can also be used with solid color stripes, this one could even be done in one solid color if you didn't want stripes, you would still have the interesting texture created by the stitches.

This time I used a v-stitch pattern fo the main part of the hat. It creates a zigzag type stripe when worked in two colors. The bottom edge is finished off by a post stitch ribbing.

The other two patterns I made in several sizes, this one I only made in 2 sizes, child and adult size. For the samples I made the child size hat in solid white and a pink and blue variegated yarn, and the adult size was made in two solid colors, white and turquoise blue.
