Dishcloth Week- Single Crochet Mesh Dishcloths

I have been wanting to do a "Dishcloth/Washcloth Week" for a while and I am finally doing it. I really like making crocheted dishcloths or washcloths for a few reasons, and judging by the popularity of those patterns on my blog I'm guessing I'm not the only one. For the rest of this week I will be sharing a new dishcloth pattern everyday. All of the yarn used in these patterns is 100% cotton yarn provided by Darice.

One reason I like to crochet dishcloths or washcloths is that they are small and quick to make. Big projects are fun to see come together, but sometimes I just want a quick finish and dishcloths are the perfect project for that.

Another thing I love, probably my favorite thing, is that dishcloths are a great way to try out new stitches. Because they are small you are able to finish quickly, but they are also big enough to give you a decent sized sample of what the stitch pattern looks like.

And one more thing is that they are great for making for quick gifts. When I started planning a Crocheted Dishcloth Week I thought that November would be a good time for it because it is gift giving season. Whether you give just a set of washcloths by themselves, or pair them with some dishsoap for a kitchen themed gift, or pair them with some pretty soap, lotion, or bath bombs for a spa themed gift, they work great. They are quick, easy, and inexpensive to make so you can make them fast for a last minute gift, or make up a bunch to keep on hand when you need a small gift.

For this first pattern I chose a super simple stitch. This is the single crochet mesh stitch. It doesn't have a very noticeable mesh type fabric unless you stretch it because the single crochet stitches are not very tall, but it does give an interesting texture to the fabric.

Similar to the Moss Stitch Dishcloth this one is is made using only single crochet and chain stitches, but rather than working into opposite stitches you always work into the same stitches. Every row is exactly the same which makes it an easy, somewhat mindless pattern.

How to Crochet Single Crochet Mesh Dishcloths

Finished size 8 1/2" square

You will need:

• Worsted Weight 100% Cotton Yarn (Sample made with Darice Essential Cotton in Ecru and Sage)
• I (5.5 mm) crochet hook
• scissors
• yarn needle

Instructions:

ch 30

Row 1: sc in second ch from hook, [ch 1, skip next ch, sc in next ch] repeat to the end (15 sc, 14 ch sp)

Row 2-26: ch 1, turn, sc in first stitch, [ch 1, skip ch space, sc in next stitch] repeat to the end (15 sc. 14 ch sp)

After the last row do not cut yarn, sc evenly all the way around the edge, finish off, weave in ends
