Post Stitch Hat

Almost 2 years ago I shared my Bead Stitch Hat pattern and it has been by far one of my most popular patterns. It also happens to be one of my favorites so I am glad other people are enjoying it too. Earlier this year I shared a couple of new patterns that were made in the same style but used different stitches in place of the bead stitch.

This hat is another in that "collection" of hat patterns. This one uses front and back post stitches in place of the bead stitches. I really like to look of the highly textured, alternating rows of stitches. I love that it creates a lot of visual interest with a single color of yarn.

For this hat I added a ribbing stitch made of post stitches, the same stitch used for the ribbing around the bottom of the hat, in between the rounds of half double crochet. I thought it would look neat and kind of give a vertical texture to contrast the horizontal rounds of half double crochet. I thought it turned out looking very similar to the knit C.C. beanies that you see everywhere, but a crocheted version.

How to Crochet the Post Stitch Hat

You will need:

• 1 skein of worsted weight yarn (I used All Things You Essential Worsted in Bur)
• I crochet hook
• Faux Fur Pom Pom (optional)
• yarn needle
• scissors

Instructions:

Special Stitches:

hdc in 3rd loop: work the hdc in the loop/bar behind the top of the stitch that you normally work into

Begin with magic ring, beginning ch 2 does not count as a stitch

Round 1: in mr, ch 2, 10 dc, slip stitch to first dc to join (10 dc)

Round 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each stitch, slip stitch to first dc to join (20 dc)

Round 3: ch 2, [2 dc in first stitch, 1 dc in next] repeat around, slip stitch to first stitch to join (30 dc)

Round 4: ch 2, [2 dc in first stitch, 1 dc in next 2] repeat around, slip stitch to first stitch to join (40 dc)

Round 5: ch 2, [2 dc in first stitch, 1 dc in next 3] repeat around, slip stitch to first stitch to join (50 dc)

Round 6: ch 2, [2 dc in first stitch, 1 dc in next 4] repeat around, slip stitch to first stitch to join (60 dc)

Round 7: ch 2, hdc in each stitch around, slip stitch to first hdc to join (60 hdc)

Round 8: ch 2, hdc in 3rd loop in each stitch around, slip stitch to first hdc to join (60 hdc)

Round 9: ch 2, hdc in 3rd loop in each stitch around, slip stitch to first hdc to join (60 hdc)

Round 10: ch 1, [2 sc in 3rd loop of first stitch, 1 sc in 3rd loop of next 14] repeat around slip stitch to first sc to join (64 sc)

Round 11: ch 2, hdc in each stitch, join with sl st to first hdc to join (64 hdc)

Round 12: ch 2, [fphdc around first stitch, bphdc around next stitch] repeat around (64 hdc)

Round 13: ch 2, hdc in each stitch around, join with slip stitch (64 hdc)

Round 14:  ch 2, hdc in 3rd loop in each stitch around, slip stitch to first hdc to join (64 hdc)

Round 15: ch 2, hdc in 3rd loop in each stitch around, slip stitch to first hdc to join (64 hdc)

Round 16: ch 1, sc in 3rd loop in each stitch around, slip stitch to first sc to join (64 sc)

Round 17: ch 2, hdc in each stitch, join with sl st to first hdc to join (64 hdc)

Round 18: ch 2, [fphdc around first stitch, bphdc around next stitch] repeat around (64 hdc)

Round 19: ch 2, hdc in each stitch around, join with slip stitch (64 hdc)

Round 20:  ch 2, hdc in 3rd loop in each stitch around, slip stitch to first hdc to join (64 hdc)

Round 21: ch 2, hdc in 3rd loop in each stitch around, slip stitch to first hdc to join (64 hdc)

Round 22: ch 2, dc in 3rd loop of each stitch around, slip stitch to first dc to join (64 dc)

Round 23: ch 2, [fpdc in first dc, bpdc in next dc] repeat around (64 dc)

Round 22: ch 2, [fpdc in first dc, bpdc in next dc] repeat around (64 dc)

Finish off, cut yarn, sew pom pom to the top of the hat (optional), weave in all ends
