Fall Moss Cowl

Now that September is here and my kids have gone back to school I am ready for fall to be here. Although, I guess if I am being honest I am always ready for fall to be here. It is my favorite season and always has been. I think part of that is because my birthday is in the fall, also it starts the holiday season. But I also just love the cooler weather, the crispness in the air, the changing leaves, the smells of pumpkin spice and apple. I just love all of it. 

When Kraemer yarn offered to send me some of their Tatamy Tweed yarn, which is a Cotton/Acrylic DK blend, I knew it would be perfect for that cooler, but not freezing, fall weather. So, when it came time to choose the colors I wanted to order I chose colors that made me think of fall. 

Even the names made me think of being up in a cabin in the mountains on a crisp fall day. I chose Flannel (the main gray color I used), Fireplace (red), Harvest Gold (yellow), Faded Denim (blue), Evergreen (dark green), and Birch (tan). 

I wanted to make a pattern that had several colors but wasn't just a typical stripe pattern. I decided to go with a moss stitch, which is one of my favorite stitches to use. I feel like it is super versatile because you can get a very different look depending on how many rows you do of each color.  I did a 2/1 repeat, 2 rows of main color, followed by 1 row of contrasting color, repeated twice with each color. It gave sort of a spot/stripe effect that I thought was kind of neat. I made this as a short, close to the neck cowl, but because it is such a simple stitch and repeat you could easily adjust it to be a longer cowl, or even a long circle scarf that you can loop more than once. However long you choose to make it it is a pretty quick, easy, and kind of mindless crochet project. 

How to Crochet the Fall Moss Cowl

Finished size approximately 23" around x 7" tall

You will need:

• Tatamy Tweed in 6 colors
• Flannel (main)
• Fireplace (color a)
• Faded Denim (color b)
• Harvest Gold (color c)
• Evergreen (color d)
• Birch (color e))
• I crochet hook
• yarn needle 
• scissors

Instructions: 

You can begin with any even number of chains. I started with 100 chains and it was fine but I kind of wished I had done a few more, maybe 120, just to make it a little bit longer. Just keep in mind that if you go a lot longer you may need an extra skein of your main color (in my case that would have been Flannel)

When changing colors I did not cut the yarn after each round, I just carried it up the inside of the cowl. 

Begin with main color 

Ch 100, join to first ch with a sl st to make a circle being careful not to join

Round 1: ch 1, sc in each stitch, join with sl st to first sc to join (100 sc)

Round 2: ch 1, [sc in 1st st, ch 1, sk 1] repeat around, join with sl st to first sc (50 sc, 50 ch)

Round 3: sl st to first ch sp, ch 1, [sc in 1st st, ch 1, sk 1] repeat around, join with sl st to first sc (50 sc, 50 ch)

Round 4: change to color a, sl st to first ch sp, ch 1, [sc in 1st st, ch 1, sk 1] repeat around, join with sl st to first sc (50 sc, 50 ch)

Round 5: change to main color but leave color a attached, sl st to first ch sp, ch 1, [sc in 1st st, ch 1, sk 1] repeat around, join with sl st to first sc (50 sc, 50 ch)

Round 6: sl st to first ch sp, ch 1, [sc in 1st st, ch 1, sk 1] repeat around, join with sl st to first sc (50 sc, 50 ch)

Round 7: change to color a, sl st to first ch sp, ch 1, [sc in 1st st, ch 1, sk 1] repeat around, join with sl st to first sc (50 sc, 50 ch)

Round 8: change to main color (you are now done with color a so you can cut that yarn leaving a tail to weave in), sl st to first ch sp, ch 1, [sc in 1st st, ch 1, sk 1] repeat around, join with sl st to first sc (50 sc, 50 ch)

Round 9: sl st to first ch sp, ch 1, [sc in 1st st, ch 1, sk 1] repeat around, join with sl st to first sc (50 sc, 50 ch)

Round 10: change to color b, sl st to first ch sp, ch 1, [sc in 1st st, ch 1, sk 1] repeat around, join with sl st to first sc (50 sc, 50 ch)

Round 11: change to main color but leave color b attached, sl st to first ch sp, ch 1, [sc in 1st st, ch 1, sk 1] repeat around, join with sl st to first sc (50 sc, 50 ch)

Round 12: sl st to first ch sp, ch 1, [sc in 1st st, ch 1, sk 1] repeat around, join with sl st to first sc (50 sc, 50 ch)

Round 13: change to color b, sl st to first ch sp, ch 1, [sc in 1st st, ch 1, sk 1] repeat around, join with sl st to first sc (50 sc, 50 ch)

Round 14: change to main color, sl st to first ch sp, ch 1, [sc in 1st st, ch 1, sk 1] repeat around, join with sl st to first sc (50 sc, 50 ch)

Round 15: sl st to first ch sp, ch 1, [sc in 1st st, ch 1, sk 1] repeat around, join with sl st to first sc (50 sc, 50 ch)

Round 16: change to color c, sl st to first ch sp, ch 1, [sc in 1st st, ch 1, sk 1] repeat around, join with sl st to first sc (50 sc, 50 ch)

Round 17: change to main color but leave color c attached, sl st to first ch sp, ch 1, [sc in 1st st, ch 1, sk 1] repeat around, join with sl st to first sc (50 sc, 50 ch)
