A couple of weeks ago I shared a new crocheted hat pattern, the String of Beads Hat. I only made the pattern in adult size, but since then I decided I should make it in smaller sizes as well.
I made it in 4 additional sizes, 3-6 month baby, 6-12 month baby, toddler, and child. The child size fits my 7 and 8 year olds really well, for my older kids (preteen and teen ages) I find the adult size fits best with most hats including this one, but it will depend on the size of the child you are making it for.
How to Crochet the String of Beads Hat in Child Sizes
You will need:
- 1 skein of worsted weight yarn (I used Red Heart Super Saver in Frosty Green, Big Twist in Light Rose, and All Things You Essential Acrylic in Lavender and Clear Blue)
- I crochet hook
- yarn needle
- scissors
- optional- Faux Fur Pom Pom
Instructions:
Special Stitches:
HDC in 3rd Loop: work the hdc in the loop/bar behind the top of the stitch that you normally work into

Bead Stitch: The bead stitch is basically a puff stitch worked around the post of the dc next to it.
dc in first stitch, yo, insert hook post of dc, pull up a loop, yo, insert hook around post, pull up a loop, yo, insert hook around post, pull up loop, yo, pull through all loops on hook, skip next stitch

3-6 Month Baby Size
Round 1: in mr, ch 2, 10 dc, sl st to first dc to join (10 dc)
Round 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each stitch, sl st to first dc to join (20 dc)
Round 3: ch 2, [2dc in first stitch, 1 dc in next] repeat around, sl st to first dc to join (30 dc)
Round 4: ch 2, [2 dc in first stitch, 1 dc in next 2] repeat around, sl st to first dc to join (40 dc)
Round 5: ch 2, [2 hdc in first stitch, 1 hdc in next 9] repeat around, sl st to first hdc to join (44 hdc)
Round 6: ch 1, sc in third loop in each stitch around, sl st to first sc to join (44 sc)
Round 7: ch 2, work bead stitch all the way around following instructions above (dc in first stitch, puff stitch around post, skip next stitch), slip stitch to first dc (22 beads)
Round 8: ch 2, hdc in each puff stitch and ch, sl st to first hdc to join (44 hdc)
Round 9: ch 1, sc in third loop in each stitch around, sl st to first sc to join (44 sc)
Round 10: ch 2, work bead stitch all the way around, slip stitch to first dc (22 beads)
Round 11: ch 2, hdc in each puff stitch and ch, sl st to first hdc to join (44 hdc)
Round 12: ch 2, dc in third loop in each stitch around, sl st to first dc to join (44 dc)
Round 13: ch 2, [fpdc in first stitch, bpdc in next stitch] repeat around, sl st to first stitch to join (44 dc)
finish off, cut yarn, weave in ends, attach pom pom if desired
6-12 Month Baby Size
