5 Little Monsters: Anne of Green Gables Doll

Anne of Green Gables Doll

This week is my birthday so I thought it would be fun to celebrate a little. I usually am not a birthday person, I don't like to make a big deal about it or really draw attention to it, but I have been wanting to come up with a reason to do a few giveaways and figured this would be the perfect excuse. I have reached out to a few of my favorite brands and will have different giveaways happening each day leading up to my birthday on Thursday. They will all be happening over on Instagram but I will share all the details on my blog and other social media accounts as well.

Since I am celebrating my birthday I thought I would start the week off with a project that is one of my favorite things. As a teenager I loved Anne of Green Gables. I think it started with the Megan Follows movies (just the first 2, the 3rd came out later and I am not a fan), but then I read the books, all 8 of them, and loved them.

I went on to reread them more times than I can even remember. As much as I loved the movies, I think that was my first experience with feeling like the book was better. I mean, I guess that shouldn't be surprising since there are 2 movies and 8 books so you get a lot more story with the books.

I haven't read the books in forever, but Anne will always hold a special place for me. I think as a super shy young girl there was always a part of me that wished I had a little bit of Anne's spunk and enthusiasm.

My Anne doll is about 9 inches tall (7 inches sitting). She is crocheted from the bottom up and I put a little bundle of Poly-Pellets in her to help her sit up. I wanted to be able to set her on a shelf and the Poly-Pellets help her sit on her own, if you were making it as a doll to be carried around and cuddled you may choose to leave those out.

But, that leads me to today's giveaway! Fairfield World is one of my favorite companies that I have worked with since starting my blog and I use their products all the time, especially their Polyfil. The have generously provided today's giveaway prize which includes: 1- 50 oz. bag of Poyfil and 1- 24 oz. Pour and Store bag of Poly-Pellets. Perfect for making your own Anne doll, with plenty left over for lots of other projects. Head over to Instagram or click the picture below to enter!

Instructions:

Anne is made in a few pieces, the head and body are one piece made from the bottom up, the skirt is crocheted directly onto the body, the arms, legs, hair, apron, and hat are all made separately and sewn on. All pieces but the apron begin with a magic ring (How to Make a Magic Ring)

Weighted Base

First make your Poly Pellet insert by either taking a nylon and filling the toe with Poly Pellets, then tie a knot and cut off the excess (this is my favorite way) or cut a circle out of a scrap of fabric, stitch a running stitch around the outside, pull to cinch, fill, and stitch closed. Skirt

The skirt is worked in the front loops left open in Round 12 of the body, you can start anywhere around the body but I recommend starting at the back so the seam will be less noticeable. Beginning ch does not count as a stitch

Round 1: Attach the yarn to one of the front loops from round 12, ch 2, [2 dc in first stitch, 1 dc in next 5] repeat around, sl st to first dc to join (42 dc)
Round 2: ch 2, [2 dc in first stitch, 1 dc in next 6] repeat around, sl st to first dc to join (48 dc)

Round 8: 1 sc in each stitch (36 sc)
Round 9: 1 sc in each stitch (36 sc)
Round 10: 1 sc in each stitch (36 sc)
Round 11: (this makes the bangs at the front of the hair) sl st in next st, sk 2, 5 dc in next st, sk 2, sl st in next st, sk 2, 5 dc in next st, sk 2, sl st in next st,

Finish off and cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing

Cut 23- 18"-20" lengths of orange yarn

Attach one strand of yarn into each open stitch from round 10 using a larks head knot (fold the strand in half, pull the folded end through the stitch, then pull the loose ends through the loop made by the folded end, pull to tighten

Divide the strands in half and braid each side, I would recommend placing the hair on the head before braiding to make sure the braids lay the way you want them to.

Sew the hair in place using the tail you left after round 11

The apron is made in one piece but you will cut and reattach your yarn multiple times as you make different sections

Use white yarn

Waistband:
ch 31, sc in second ch from hook and each ch across (30 sc)
Finish off and cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing

Row 3: ch 1, turn, sc in each stitch (6 sc)

Strap 1:
ch 1, turn sc in first stitch
repeat 12 times (so you have one skinny strap 1 sc wide and 12 sc long)
Finish off and cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing

Strap 2:
Attach yarn to opposite corner of bib, ch 1, sc in first stitch, repeat like on the first strap so that you have another matching strap 12 sc long and 1 sc wide
Finish off and cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing

Skirt:
working on the opposite side of the waistband as the bib, count 9 stitches from the end and attach yarn
Row 1:ch 2, 2 dc in first stitch, 1 dc in each of next 10 stitches, 2 dc in last stitch (14 dc)
Row 2: ch 2, turn, 2 dc in first stitch, 1 dc in next 12 stitches, 2 dc in last stitch (16 dc)
Row 3: ch 2, turn, 2 dc in first stitch, 1 dc in next 14 stitches, 2 dc in last stitch (18 dc)
Finish off, cut yarn, weave in ends

Sew the apron onto the doll by wrapping the waistband around and stitching the ends together in the back, then pull the straps over the shoulders and stitch in place along the waistband in the back
