Easy Twisted Headband

Twisted headbands, or ear warmers, have been all over lately and I have been wanting to make some for a while. They are really easy to make and super customizable. 

You just need to start with the right size of rectangle, which means you can really make them out of pretty much any stitch you want. I will explain that more in the pattern, but for this version I chose to use half double crochet in the back loop. I like the ribbed look you get with this stitch, but can think of so many stitches that would look really neat on a headband like this. 

You start by making a flat, long rectangle, the size depends on which size of headband you are making. Once you have your rectangle you will sew the short ends together to make a look, but instead of just sewing them straight together  you off set them and fold them, then when you open up the headband it has the twist in the front. 

This pattern comes in 3 sizes, adult, teen, and child, with instructions on how to adjust that pattern to use any stitch, or weight of yarn. 

How to Crochet an Easy Twisted Headband in 3 Sizes

You will need:

• Lion Brand Heartland (samples made with Kings Canyon, Glacier Bay, and Lake Clark)
• I crochet hook (5.5mm)
• yarn needle
• measuring tape 
• scissors

Instructions:

To make this style of headband you need to start with a long rectangle that measures as follows:

Adult- 20" x 5.5"

Teen- 18" x 5"

Child- 17" x 4.5"

You can use whatever crochet stitch you like to get this size of rectangle, just remember that some stitches may be stretchier than others. I used half double crochet stitches worked in the back loop only in order to create the ribbed look. 

I used Lion Brand Heartland which is on the thinner side for a #4 weight yarn, so if you use a different yarn you may need to adjust the number of stitches to make the correct size of rectangle.

Adult Size

ch 72

Row 1: hdc in 3rd ch from hook (turning ch 2 does not count as a stitch), hdc in each ch to the end (70 hdc)

Row 2: ch 2, turn, hdc in blo of each stitch to end (70 hdc)

Row 3-14: repeat row 2 (70 hdc)

Finish off and cut yarn, leaving long tail for sewing

Fold the headband in half so the 2 short ends meet, slide the top piece over so that the edge is in the middle of the bottom piece (rows 1-7 from the bottom part of the headband will be visible and row 1 of the top half will be at approximately row 8 of the bottom half), take the half from the bottom that is sticking out and fold it over the top, then take the half of the top that is hanging over and fold it over the bottom (you have basically just created 2 interlocked u shapes), using your yarn tail stitch across the folded edges making sure to go through all 4 layers, finish off, weave in ends, and flip right side out

Teen Size

ch 66

Row 1: hdc in 3rd ch from hook (turning ch 2 does not count as a stitch), hdc in each ch to the end (64 hdc)

Row 2: ch 2, turn, hdc in blo of each stitch to end (64 hdc)

Row 3-13: repeat row 2 (64 hdc)

Finish off and cut yarn, leaving long tail for sewing

Child Size

ch 60

Row 2: ch 2, turn, hdc in blo of each stitch to end (58 hdc)

Row 3-12: repeat row 2 (58 hdc)
