Day 2 of Dishcloth Week brings the Off the Rails Dishcloth. This is a stitch I came up with for a pillow I made a few weeks ago, and as I was making it (knowing I had this week planned) I thought it would be a great texture to use for a dishcloth.
I don't know if this stitch has a name. I kind of just made it up for my pillow, but that doesn't mean it doesn't already exist out there somewhere, I have just never seen it anywhere else. It uses double crochet stitches and front post double crochet stitches to give every other stitch a raised texture.
The stitch pattern is a 4 row repeat, 2 rows together create the raised stitch pattern but the sections are staggered. So you have one 2 row section that creates a line of raised stitches, then another 2 row section where the post stitches are worked in the opposite stitches. This is what gives the stitch pattern its off center, staggered effect.
Post stitches are a great way to add heavy texture in crochet so if you are looking for a washcloth or dishcloth pattern with a lot of texture, this is a great one to try out.
How to Crochet the Off the Rails Dishcloth
You will need:
- 1 ball of worsted weight cotton yarn (I used Dishie from WeCrochet in Mint and Dewdrop)
- H crochet hook
- yarn needle
- scissors
Instructions:
*Note: the turning chains do count as your first stitch on all rows. I typically do a ch 3 turning chain for dc stitches, but because the post stitches pull the rows down so they are a little shorter I found that a ch 2 worked better for this project and didn't leave the gap that the ch 3 did. If you prefer to use a ch 3 just add one ch to your starting ch and each turning ch. Turning ch does count as a stitch.
ch 32
Row 1: dc in 3rd ch from hook (first 2 count as first dc), dc in each ch to the end (31 dc)
Row 2: (right side row) ch 2 (counts as first stitch), [fpdc in next stitch, dc in next] repeat to end (30 dc- 15 fpdc, 16 regular)Row 3: ch 2, dc in each stitch across (31 dc)
Row 4: ch 2, [dc in next stitch, fpdc in next] repeat until there are 2 stitches remaining, dc in last 2 stitches (31 dc- 14 fpdc, 17 regular)
Row 5: ch 2, dc in each stitch to the end ( 31 dc)
Rows 6-16: repeat rows 2-5 until you have 16 rows, or your dishcloth is as long as you want it (if you choose to do more or less rows make sure you end on either a row 2 or row 4 in order to complete the pattern)
Border: continuing from the last row, ch 1, turn 90 degrees and work sc evenly along the edge, sc 3 in corner, sc across the edge, continue until you have worked sc all around the square, sl st to first sc, finish off, cut yarn, weave in ends
