My daughter asked if we could get donuts as a special treat to celebrate the first day of summer break now that all of the kids are done with school for the year, and I thought it would be fun so we ran to the store early this morning and picked up a dozen donuts. I had no idea it also happened to be National Donut Day, but it was a really fun coincidence.
To celebrate further I thought it would be fun to share this easy crocheted donut pattern.
These little donuts are a really quick project to make and you can make them in lots of different colors or "flavors", with sprinkles or without. And they work up so fast and are great way to use up small scraps of yarn, especially for the frosting and sprinkles.
My kids are going to love playing with these donuts with their play food, and I'm sure we will be adding a lot more to our collection.
How to Make Crocheted Donuts
You will need:
- worsted weight yarn in desired colors (I used Loops and Threads Impeccable)
- G crochet hook
- yarn needle
- Poly-Fil fiberfill
- stitch marker
Instructions:
Donut
I used Loops and Threads Impeccable in Heather for the donut, a stitch marker is helpful to keep track of the rows while working the straight section

Round 4: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 4 st] repeat around (36 sc)
Round 5: 1 sc in each st (36 sc)
Round 6: 1 sc in each st (36 sc)
Round 7: 1 sc in each st (36 sc)

Round 9: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 3 st] repeat around (24 sc)
Round 10: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 2 st] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 11: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (12 sc)
Finish off and cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing
Stitch the two ends together to form the center of the donut, stuffing the donut as you go
Frosting
For the frosting I used Loops and Threads Impeccable in Soft Rose and Soft Taupe
ch 12, join into a circle with a sl st
Round 1: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 2: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 st] repeat around (24 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3 st] repeat around (30 sc)
Round 4: sc in first st, [sk 1 st, 4 hdc in next st, sk 1 st, sc in next 3 st] repeat around, ending with 2 sc on the last repeat, sl st to first sc to join (15 sc, 5 hdc shells)
Finish off, cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing
Assembly
Sew the frosting to the top of the donut, I found it easiest to start in the center, then stitch down the outer edge of the frosting
Add sprinkles if desired by making several small stitches all over the top of the frosting layer. I used a variegated yarn (Loops and Threads Impeccable in Luxury) so that I didn't have to change colors
