Today I am excited to be sharing a new crochet pattern as part of the 3rd annual Halloween Crochet Along with CAL Central. The crochet along started in August and goes through the end of September with a new Halloween themed pattern coming out each Monday and Thursday.
This is the 9th pattern of the crochet along, so be sure to head over to
Underground Crafter to see all of the patterns, and for all of the details, including how to enter the giveaway at the end of the crochet along.
I have had the idea for this pumpkin bear for a long time, like several years, but because it is a seasonal design if I don't get around to making it before fall is over it gets pushed off to the idea list for the next year. But this year I finally made it!
I debated a lot about how I wanted to make the pumpkin, do I make ribs somehow so it has the bumpy texture of a pumpkin, do I add a Jack O' Lantern face, but in the end I decided to keep it as simple as possible. I still think it would be really cute to add a face on the belly though! You could either make crocheted appliqués, cut felt shapes, or even just embroider the face on.
One nice thing about keeping it as a plain pumpkin though, is the fact that it works not only for halloween, but all through the fall.
I wanted to keep the assembly as simple as possible so the head and body are made in one piece, the other pieces are made separately and sewn on. The finished bear sits about 7 inches tall.

Hat Assembly
Pull the yarn ends of the stem through the stitches in the center of the hat, tie securely and trim ends. Repeat the same process with the vine.
Bear Assembly
Sew the muzzle onto the front of the head below the eyes, lightly stuffing it as you sew it on.
Sew the ears to the top side of the head, curving them to fit along the head.
Lightly stuff the ends of the arms and sew to the side of the body as close as possible to the color change between body and head.
Lightly stuff the ends of the legs and stitch them to the bottom of the body. I wanted my bear to be sitting so to determine the proper placement for the legs I just sat the bear body down and put the legs where I wanted them and sewed them in that place.
Sew the little pumpkin top hat to the top of the head in between the ears.
