I have seen mandala style projects all over the place and Cricut has a lot of fun ones, different animals and other designs, available in Design Space. I don't love the weeding process, I mean, it isn't that I absolutely hate it but it definitely isn't my favorite part of making a vinyl or iron on projects. And those project take a lot of weeding.
When I got a new BrightPad Go I thought it would be a good time to give a project like this a try. The BrightPad can help you see the cuts in your vinyl or iron on to make weeding easier. With so many little pieces to weed it definitely made the job easier to be able to see the cuts a little better. The fact that it is cordless makes it even more convenient to use for projects like this. I grabbed some weeding tools to go along with it since I knew I was going to want as much help as I could get.
I chose an elephant, but you can search mandala, or mandala animals in Design Space to find a large selection of different designs. In addition to the animals there are also other designs, like circles, states, and other shapes.
I cut the elephant mandala design that I chose out of Iron On, and once I finished weeding it I pressed it onto a canvas tote bag. It definitely took a a while to weed the design, but the finished design turned out really fun.
How to Make a Mandala Elephant Tote Bag
You will need:
- Cricut (I used my Explore Air 2 for this project)
- Iron On in desired color
- BrightPad Go
- Weeding Tools
- Tote Bag
- EasyPress
- EasyPress Mat
Instructions:
Begin by choosing the design that you want to cut out. I searched for mandala, or mandala animal to find the image I want. To help narrow the search you can select single layer images on the left side of the screen (on a computer).
Once you have the design chosen, resize it to fit your tote bag.
Cut it out of iron on.
Weed the design using the BrightPad Go to help you see the cut lines better, and a weeding hook to help you weed the tiny pieces.
Press onto the tote bag. I used Everyday Iron On and pressed it for 30 seconds at 315 degrees.
Fill your tote bag and enjoy!
