Christmas is only a few days away and I am trying to get in a couple last minute projects. One that I have really wanted to get up before Christmas is this little Christmas Gnome. I feel like gnomes have been all over this year. I made a gnome pillow a couple of weeks ago, and this little guy has been on my to-do list for quite a while.
You can make him in a couple of different ways, and I think he is really cute either way. For both options you make a little body that has weighted stuffing beads in the bottom, then add a little tassel beard, a round nose, a couple of little arms, and a tall pointy hat pulled down to the nose.
For one option you just assemble all of those pieces and you have yourself a little gnome. I seriously considered leaving him like that, because I think he is really cute as he is at that point. But my original vision was to have him have long striped legs, so I went ahead and added those. Whichever way you choose to make him, he is going to be a pretty adorable addition to your decor.
How to Crochet a Christmas Gnome
You will need:
- medium weight yarn in white (hair color/leg stripes), tan (skin tone), green (body color), red (hat/leg stripes), and brown (shoes), or desired colors (Sample made with Red Heart Super Saver in White, Buff, Medium Thyme, Cherry Red, and Cafe Latte)
- G crochet hook
- Poly Pellets weighted stuffing beads
- nylon knee-high or fabric scrap
- Poly-Fil stuffing
- yarn needle
- scissors
Instructions:
All pieces are crocheted beginning with a magic ring
Prepare the weighted insert for your base by adding some weighted stuffing beads to a nylon and tying it closed or cutting a circle of fabric and stitching a running stitch around the edge and pulling to make a little pouch, fill with beads, pull closed and stitch to secure. You can see more detailed instructions here:

Assembly
Use the tails of the yarn you tied the top of the beard to attach (either sew or tie) the beard to the front top edge of the body.
Sew the nose on top of the beard.
Sew the arms to the side of the body along the top edge.
Stuff the hat, then pull down over the top edge of the body, curving over the nose, and sew in place.
At this point you can leave it as is and have a short little chubby gnome, or you can continue and add the legs.
Stuff the feet lightly but leave the legs unstuffed, sew the legs to the bottom of the body.
