Trellis Stripe Market Bag

 Market bags are one of my favorite spring/summer crochet projects. It seems like you can always use bags, whether you are using them as actual market bags or reusable grocery bags, or to carry your latest crochet project, to give something to someone, or anything else you want to put in them, you can always find a use for a bag. 

They are also just the right size to make great take with you projects, like to work on while I sit in my car at school pickup, or to take with me to the park to work on while I watch the kids play. I like having a project I can carry around places like that and the right project has to fit a few criteria for me. One, it can't be too big because it needs to fit in a small project bag that I will probably shove in my purse or my backpack. Second, it is best if it is crocheted in one piece, and even better if it is in one color. Basically the less supplies I have to carry the better. I don't like to take projects like stuffed animals with me because there are usually lots of pieces, plus stuffing, safety eyes, etc. 

In the colder times of the year my favorite projects to take with me places are hats, and sometimes scarves. But in the warmer months my favorites are bags and dishcloths. Usually all I need for those projects are a skein of yarn and a hook. 

I have a style that I like to use for my market bags, and I have made several using that same basic pattern just switching up the stitches that I use for the main part of the bag. (Like this Market Bag, the Aurora Market Bag, and the V-Stitch Market Bag. For this bag I used a combination of a trellis stitch and rows of double crochet to create stripes. 

How to Crochet the Trellis Stripe Market Bag

You will need:

• Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn (2 balls, or I used a cone of Peaches 'n Cream in Seabreeze)
• H Crochet Hook
• Yarn Needle
• Scissors

Instructions:

Beginning ch doesn't count as a stitch unless specified 

Begin with a magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 2, 12 dc, sl st to first dc to join (12 dc)

Round 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each stitch, sl st to first dc to join (24 dc)

Round 3: ch 2, [2 dc in first stitch, 1 dc in next stitch] repeat around, sl st to first dc to join (36 dc)

Round 4: ch 2, [2 dc in first stitch, 1 dc in next 2 stitches] repeat around, sl st to first dc to join (48 dc)

Round 5: ch 2, [2 dc in first stitch, 1 dc in next 3 stitches] repeat around, sl st to first dc to join (60 dc)

Round 6: ch 2, [2 dc in first stitch, 1 dc in next 4 stitches] repeat around, sl st to first dc to join (72 dc)

Round 7: ch 2, [2 dc in first stitch, 1 dc in next 5 stitches] repeat around, sl st to first dc to join (84 dc)

Round 8: ch 2, dc in each stitch, sl st to first dc to join (84 dc)

Round 9: ch 2, dc in each stitch, sl st to first dc to join (84 dc)

Round 10: ch 2, dc in each stitch, sl st to first dc to join (84 dc)

Round 11: ch 1, sc in first st, [ch 5, sk 3, sc in next st] repeat around ending with a sl st in the first sc (21 sc, 21- 5 ch loops)

Round 12: sl st in next 3 ch so that you are in the middle (3rd) ch of the first ch loop, ch 1, sc in same st, [ch 5, sk 5, sc in next st (middle/3rd ch of next loop)] repeat around ending with a sl st in the first sc (21 sc, 21-5 ch loops)

Round 13: sl st in next 3 ch so that you are in the middle (3rd) ch of the first ch loop, ch 1, sc in same st, [ch 3, sk 5, sc in next st (middle/3rd ch of next loop)] repeat around ending with a sl st in the first sc (21 sc, 21- 3 ch loops)

Round 14: ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in each st around, sl st to first dc to join (84 dc)

Round 15: ch 1, sc in first st, [ch 5, sk 3, sc in next st] repeat around ending with a sl st in the first sc (21 sc, 21- 5 ch loops)

Round 16: sl st in next 3 ch so that you are in the middle (3rd) ch of the first ch loop, ch 1, sc in same st, [ch 5, sk 5, sc in next st (middle/3rd ch of next loop)] repeat around ending with a sl st in the first sc (21 sc, 21-5 ch loops)

Round 17: sl st in next 3 ch so that you are in the middle (3rd) ch of the first ch loop, ch 1, sc in same st, [ch 3, sk 5, sc in next st (middle/3rd ch of next loop)] repeat around ending with a sl st in the first sc (21 sc, 21- 3 ch loops)

Round 18: ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in each st around, sl st to first dc to join (84 dc)

Round 20: sl st in next 3 ch so that you are in the middle (3rd) ch of the first ch loop, ch 1, sc in same st, [ch 5, sk 5, sc in next st (middle/3rd ch of next loop)] repeat around ending with a sl st in the first sc (21 sc, 21-5 ch loops)

In the next round you will make the handle by skipping some stitches around the top of the bag and adding chains to make the handle. You will then work single crochet stitches in those chains in the next round to make the straps. I made the straps 50 chains long, to make a longer strap add more chains, for a shorter handle work fewer chains, just make sure you work the same number of chains on both sides.

Round 25: ch 1, 9 sc, ch 50, sk 24 stitches, 18 sc, ch 50, sk 24 stitches, 9 sc, sl st to first sc to join (36 sc, 100 ch)

Round 26: ch 1, sc in each stitch, sl st to first sc to join (136 sc)

Round 27: ch 1, sc in each stitch, sl st to first sc to join (136 sc)

Finish off and weave in ends
