Snowman Hand Puppet

I have participated in this make along a few times in the past and my favorite category to make something for is the kids week. I think that is just the easiest group for me to come up with ideas for. This year I signed up to do the kids week again, specifically to make a sewing project for that week. 

A couple of weeks ago I made a little set of crocheted finger puppets and I kind of had that idea on my mind as I planned this project. I thought a Christmas or winter themed puppet would be kind of fun, so I came up with the idea for this snowman hand puppet. 

I started out by making a simple hand puppet shape with white fleece. I wanted something that I wouldn't need to finish the edges and I happened to have a big piece of white fleece on hand and it worked perfectly. Then I added felt pieces to make decorate my snowman, as well as some buttons down the front. 

I stitched the pieces on with embroidery floss, adding some extra embellishments as I stitched. Then I sewed the fleece pieces together and the puppet was finished. It was a pretty quick project and would be super easy to make different versions by mixing up the stitching, or the style of hat and scarf, etc. I went for the super traditional snowman look with a top hat for this version. My 5 year old watched me make it and could wait to try it out when I finished it.

How to Make a Snowman Hand Puppet

You will need:

• white fleece
• felt in a variety of colors
• embroidery floss in a variety of colors
• assorted buttons
• embroidery needle
• scissors
• sewing machine
• white thread
• Snowman Hand Puppet Pattern

Instructions:

Print the Snowman Hand Puppet Pattern and cut out as follows:

Cut 2 Body Pieces on the fold out of white fleece

Cut 2 Eyes out of black felt

Cut 5 Mouth Pieces out of black felt

Cut 2 Hats out of black felt

Cut 1 Nose out orange felt

Cut 1 Hat Band out of felt, any color (I used gray)

Cut 1 Scarf on the fold out of felt, any color (I used red)

Cut 2 Scarf Ends out of felt, any color (I used red)

Lay out the face and scarf pieces on one snowman body piece (this will be the body front) to determine how you want them placed. You can lay the hat on to make sure you have space to add it above the eyes, but then set it aside to sew on later. 

Then 1 piece at a time stitch the face and scarf in place with embroidery floss. I used 3 strands to sew the pieces on, and 6 strands for decorative accents. I used either a running stitch or backstitch to stitch most of the pieces to attach them, and a large cross stitch on the mouth pieces.

Use contrasting colors of floss to add any accents you want, like striped on the scarf.

Stitch 3 buttons on the belly of the snowman front.

Once you have the face, scarf, and buttons sewn on the front place the front snowman body on the back, wrong sides together and stitch around the outside, leaving the bottom flat edge open. I did just under a 1/4" seam allowance, just enough to be sure that you caught all of the fabric on both sides and don't hat any holes.

Next take 1 hat piece (this will be the hat front) and stitch the hat band above the brim. I used a very pale blue to stitch little asterisk type snowflakes across the band to hold it in place. 

Place that hat piece on the front of the snowman on top of the head, and the other hat piece matched up on the back of the snowman, then stitch around the hat to stitch in place. Again, I just used a running stitch to stitch the hat pieces together and attach it to the top of the head. 

And now your little snowman puppet is done and ready for little hands to enjoy. You could change it up with a beanie with a Pom Pom on top, a Santa hat, mittens, stitch a smile instead of the coal, or anything else you can think of.
