Kids heading back to school in our house always means getting school supplies for home too. Making sure we have everything ready for homework needs, like pens and pencils, colored pencils, crayons, scissors, and glue, all organized and ready to use. There are tons of different ways you can store those kinds of things, but one thing that works great for pens and pencils and stuff like that, and is pretty inexpensive and easy to find, is pint size mason jars. And crocheted jar covers are an easy way to add some color and cuteness.
I actually had the idea to make these jar covers because I have one of those three tier rolling carts in my office next to my desk, and on the top shelf I have some containers that hold some things that I use often so I want to have them easily accessible. One of those is a glass jar that is full of crochet hooks.
One day I was putting some yarn away and tidying up around my desk and I saw a skein of yarn and the glass jar full of crochet hooks, and next thing I know I was crocheting a jar cover. This is probably a good example of why my office/craft room is never clean. As I clean things up and put them away I find things and inspiration hits, and before I know it I am sitting in a still messy craft room knee deep in a new project.
I had a few different thoughts on stitches to use and couldn't quite make up my mind, so I decided to make a trio of jar covers instead of just one. All of the stitch patterns I chose use double crochet stitches as the base. The first one is just plain double crochet all the way up. Then for the next one I did a granny stitch, and for the last I used a v-stitch. And then each one is finished off along the top with a reverse single crochet, or crab stitch, to give it a nice edge.
It was kind of fun because the yarn I used was a self striping yarn, Red Heart Super Saver Stripes in Retro Stripe, and since each one started in a different place in the color order they all turned out different colors, but still matching.
How to Crochet a Trio of Jar Covers
You will need:
Worsted Weight Yarn
H Crochet Hook (5mm)
Pint Size Canning Jars
Yarn Needle
Instructions:
All three covers start with a magic ring and a base of double crochet rounds.
Pattern will indicate if starting chain counts as a stitch or not.
