Sneaky Snakes- Summer Mini Amigurumi Crochet Along Day 3

We are to Day 3, a quarter of the way through the Summer 2023 Mini Amigurumi Crochet Along. Today's tiny amigurumi is probably one of the simplest ones of the whole set, a little sneaky snake. 

The little snake is kind of the exception of the size and shape of animals included in this set. I mentioned with the bear that I used the same style/pattern as I did with the farm animals in the spring crochet along with one exception, and this would be the exception. The shape of a snake meant it had to be a little different. 

I also have said that all of the amigurumi would be about 3-4", and again the snake is an exception to the rule. But I think even though it is a little longer than the other items in the set it still qualifies as "mini". The finished snake is about 7" long, although you could easily make it as long as you want to. 

This is also an amigurumi that you can easily customize in colors and design, as well as length. I chose to use a solid color for the head and a striped or variegated yarn for the body of the snake. I thought the variegated colors gave it a snake like pattern without requiring color changes. But you could use a solid color for the whole snake, or change colors every couple of rows to make stripes, whatever you want. The yellow snake I made was made with a Loops and Threads Impeccable Speckle Stripes yarn, which has solid sections and speckled/variegated sections. I used the solid yellow portion to make the head, then cut the yarn and switched to the speckled section to make the body. The green snake was made with two separate yarns, a solid green for the head and a harvest stripe from I Love This Yarn for the body. 

I used a pipe cleaner inside of the snakes to make them bendy, so that you can bend them into whatever position you want. It makes them extra fun to play with.

How to Crochet a Sneaky Snake

Finished Size: about 7" long 

You will need:

• medium weight yarn in desired colors (samples made in Loops and Threads Impeccable in Sunrise and Fern, and I Love This Yarn in Cinnamon Cedar)
• G crochet hook (4 mm)
• 2- 6 mm safety eyes
• Polyfil fiberfill
• 2 pipe cleaners
• yarn needle
• stitch markers 
• embroidery floss and needle
• scissors

Instructions:

The snake is crocheted in one long piece, no sewing required. The pipe cleaners are twisted together and inserted once the head is made, then you continue working around the pipe cleaners until you reach the end. You can adjust the length of the snake by continuing to work the 6 sc rounds as long as you want, or need in order to cover the pipe cleaner.  Only the head of the snake is stuffed. 

Snake

Begin by taking 2 pipe cleaners and twisting them together (you can use just one, but two is a little sturdier and helps keep the shape bent the way you want it). Then bend each end toward the center so that the pipe cleaner is about 6" long, bending the ends in ensures that you don't have sharp ends that may poke through the finished snake.

Make 1 starting with solid color yarn, beginning with magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)

Round 2:  [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (9 sc)

Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (12 sc)

Rounds 4-5: 1 sc in each st (12 sc)

Add safety eyes between rounds 2 and 3, a few stitches apart

Add a little bit of stuffing to the head and insert one end of the bent pipe cleaner into the head of the snake (you can kind of wrap the stuffing around the end of the pipe cleaner and then put it in the head)

Round 6: sc2tog around (6 sc)

Switch to striped or variegated yarn (or yarn using for the body of the snake)

Rounds 7-27: 1 sc in each st (I worked 21 rounds of sc to cover my pipe cleaner, if you still have pipe cleaner sticking out at the end of 21 rounds you can continue working rounds of sc until the pipe cleaner is covered) (6 sc)

Round 28: [sc2tog, sc in next st] repeat (4 sc)

Round 29: 1 sc in each st (4 sc)

Finish off and cut yarn, weave in ends 

Embroider a mouth on the head of the snake
