Today is Day 10 of the Woodland Christmas Mini Amigurumi Crochet Along and today's little wintery woodland animal is Bitty Beaver.
The little beaver has big teeth sticking out in front, and a big, flat tail in the back. It is wearing a trapper style hat on its head, with earflaps on the side and a flipped up flap in the front.
I didn't add any extra Christmas stuff to this one like the mouse, fox, deer, and raccoon, just a little winter hat, like with the bunny and the robin. Although when I was making it I thought I probably should have given the freshly chopped Christmas tree to the beaver instead of the fox.
The beaver is made following the same pattern style as the others animals, with the head and body in one piece with all of the other parts sewn on. One of the tricky things with the beaver was making the big front teeth. I decided to go with one big, white piece that is supposed to represent 2 teeth, rather than trying to make 2 separate teeth. If you wanted to give more of an impression of 2 separate teeth you could embroider a line in the middle to make it look like that.
The hat was mad a little oversized so it fits over the top of the beaver's head. It has earflaps on each side, and a little flipped up front flap in a contrasting color.

How to Crochet a Bright Beaver
Finished Size about 4" tall sitting
You will need:
- Worsted weight yarn in brown, tan, dark brown, white, and hat color (Sample made with Red Heart Super Saver in Coffee, White, and Buff, Loops & Threads Impeccable in Walnut and Soft Rose)
- G crochet hook (4/4.25 mm)
- 2- 6mm safety eyes
- 8 or 9 mm safety nose
- stuffing
- yarn needle
- stitch markers
- scissors
Instructions:
All of the pieces, except the teeth and hat flap, are made in the round beginning with a magic ring, the head and body made in one piece, the arms, legs, tail, nose, and hat made separately and sewn on. Safety eyes and nose attached where directed, if you choose two embroider the eyes and nose (better for small children) just embroider in the same spot.
Body/Head
Make 1 with brown yarn (Loops & Threads Impeccable in Walnut), beginning with magic ring
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)
Rounds 4-8: 1 sc in each st (18 sc)
Begin stuffing and continue stuffing as you work
Round 9: sc2tog around (9 sc)
Round 10: 2 sc in each st (18 sc)
Round 11: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (24 sc)
Round 12: 1 sc in each st (24 sc)
Rounds 13-15: 1 sc in each st (24 sc)
Round 16: [sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (18 sc)
Insert safety eyes between rounds 13 and 14 about 3 stitches apart
Round 17: [sc2tog, sc in next st] repeat around (12 sc)
Round 18: sc2tog around (6 sc)
Finish off, weave in ends
Nose
Make 1 with tan yarn (Red Heart Super Saver in Buff), beginning with a magic ring
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: [2 sc in each of first 2 sts, 1 sc in next st] repeat (10 sc)
Round 3: 1 sc in each st (10 sc)
Finish off and cut yarn, leaving long tail for sewing
Insert safety nose, or embroider, to tip of nose
Add a tiny bit of stuffing to nose and stitch in place on face below/between eyes
Teeth
Make 1 with white yarn, beginning with a chain
ch 3
Row 1: sc in second ch from hook, sc in last ch (2 sc)
Finish off and cut yarn, leaving long tail for sewing
Stitch the teeth under the nose, if desired stitch a line down the middle of the teeth with embroidery floss to give the impression of 2 separate teeth
Arms
Make 2 with brown yarn, beginning with a magic ring
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (9 sc)
Round 3: [sc2tog, sc in next st] repeat around (6 sc)
Rounds 4-5: 1 sc in each st (6 sc)
Finish off and cut yarn leaving a long tail for sewing
Sew the 2 arms to the side of the body between the body and head
Legs
Make 2 with brown yarn, beginning with a magic ring
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3:1 sc in each st (12 sc)
stuff end lightly
Round 4: sc2tog around (6 sc)
Rounds 5-6: 1 sc in each st (6 sc)
Finish off and cut yarn leaving a long tail for sewing
Sew the 2 legs to the bottom side of the body in a sitting position
Tail
Make 1 with dark brown yarn (Red Heart Super Saver in Coffee), beginning with a magic ring
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Rounds 3-5: 1 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 6: [sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (9 sc)
Rounds 7: 1 sc in each st (9 sc)
Round 8: [sc2tog, sc in next st] repeat around (6 sc)
Finish off and cut yarn leaving a long tail for sewing
Flatten and sew the tail to back of body
Hat
The hat is made in 2 pieces, the flap which is made first and set aside to be attached in the final round of the hat, and the rest of the hat. The main part of the hat is made, then without stopping or cutting the yarn you will move on to the first ear flap. The ear flap is worked back and forth in rows. When the first earflap is done you will cut the yarn and reattach it on the other side to make the second earflap. Last you will work one last round of single crochet going all the way around the edge of the hat, including earflaps, and attaching the front flap to the front by single crocheting through both layers. The hat is made slightly oversized so it should slip right over the head, but not be too big.
Front Flap
ch 7
Row 1: turn, sk first ch, sc in each ch to the end (6 sc)
Rows 2-3: ch 1, turn, sc in each st (6 sc)
Finish off, leaving tail for sewing
Hat
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 4: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (24 sc)
Round 5: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (30 sc)
Rounds 6-9: 1 sc in each st (30 sc)
do not cut yarn, move on to first earflap
Earflap 1
Row 1: sc in next 4 sts (4 sc)
Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc in each st from previous row (4 sc)
Row 3: sc2tog twice (2 sc)
Finish off and cut yarn, move on to second earflap
Earflap 2
Count 12 stitches across the front of the hat, the next 4 stitches are the stitches you will work the earflap in (each earflap uses 4 sts, you should have 12 unworked sts across the front, and 10 unworked sts across the back). Attach your yarn in the first stitch where you will be working the second flap-
Row 1: sc in 4 sts (4 sc)
Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc in each st from previous row (4 sc)
Row 3: sc2tog twice (2 sc)
Do not cut yarn, continue on to finishing step
Finishing
Starting from the middle of the second earflap sc around the entire hat working evenly around the earflaps and in each stitch across the back and front, when working across the front attach the flap by placing the edge of the flap centered along the front edge (you should have 3 sts, then the flap lined up with the next 6 sts, then 3 more sts before the next earflap). When you get to those sts sc through both the hat and flap layers
Finish off leaving tail for sewing
Use the tail of the flap to tack down the top edge of the flap
Put the hat on the beavers head and use the tail of the hat to stitch the hat to the head, I just made a few stitches around, just enough to secure it so it doesn't fall off.
