Today is Day 3 of the Woodland Christmas Mini Amigurumi Crochet Along. The past two days I have had little animals, but I also wanted to include a few other woodsy elements that were not animals. So today's pattern is a little mini mushroom.

When I first envisioned this theme this was one of the things that I thought of including, but I almost decided to cut it. As I was finishing it up my 7 year old son walked into the room and looked at the mushroom I was making with a very confuses look on my face. He said, "what does a mushroom have to do with Christmas".

He wasn't really wrong, but it fit with the woodland theme and it was part of how I had pictured the set, so I decided to keep it. And I guess if we are getting really picky, what do forest animals really have to do with Christmas besides the fact that I am putting little winter clothes and accessories on them, adding a few little Christmasy elements, and saying they are Christmas themed.

This little mushroom is pretty quick to make, there are less pieces than most of the little animals that have arms, legs, ears, and tails that all need to be sewn on. It is made in 2 main pieces, the stem and the cap, and then 3 little circles are made and sewn onto the cap to make the dots.

With all of my mini amigurumi crochet alongs I have done little faces, sometimes just eyes or eyes and noses, like with the animals, sometimes eyes and a little smile. It was just kind of a cutesy style that I had decided to go with and I think it is fun and have decided to continue it. The only exception was the little gnome in my advent crochet along last year, because his little hat was pulled down too low. That being said, as I made this little mushroom I wasn't sure if the smiley face fit my vision for this set. I ended up making 2, one with a face and one without. I still go back and forth between which way I like it best, I'm just not sure. You can make it either way, whichever you prefer.

How to Crochet a Mini Mushroom

Finished Size about 3" tall

You will need:

Instructions:

All of the pieces are made in the round beginning with a magic ring, the stem and under part of the mushroom top are made in one piece. If you choose to add a face you can add safety eyes (or embroidered eyes) and a little smile to the stem. The cap is made separately with the little dots stitches onto it. The cap is crocheted directly to the stem piece working through both layers to attach it. Be sure to very lightly stuff the cap section or else it will puff up too much and you will see more of the underside part of the mushroom top.

Stem

Make 1 with yarn in cream/tan (sample with face made with Red Heart Super Saver in Aran, sample without face made with Loops & Threads Impeccable in Putty), beginning with magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)
Rounds 4-5: 1 sc in each st (18 sc)
Round 6: [sc2tog, sc in next st] repeat around (12 sc)
Rounds 7-9: 1 sc in each st (12 sc)

If adding a face insert safety eyes between rounds 6 and 7 about 2-3 stitches apart, embroider a smile just below the eyes

Begin stuffing and continue stuffing the stem as you work

Round 10: [sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (9 sc)
Round 11: 2 sc in flo of each st  (18 sc)
Round 12: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (24 sc)
Round 13: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (30 sc)

Finish off and set aside

Cap

Make 1 with red yarn or desired color, beginning with a magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 4: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (24 sc)
Round 5: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (30 sc)
Rounds 6-7: 1 sc in each st (30 sc)

Place the cap on top of the stem and work the next round through both the cap layer and the flared out part of the stem, as you work around the cap add a little bit of stuffing, be careful not to overstuff or the cap will be pushed up and you will see more of the underside of the mushroom top, just add enough stuffing that it isn't flat.

Round 8: 1 sc in each st around, working through both layers, sl st to the first sc to join (30 sc)

Finish off and cut yarn, weave in ends

Spots

Make 1 large spot and 2 small spots with white yarn or desired color, beginning with a magic ring

Large Spot

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)

Finish off and cut yarn, leaving long tail for sewing

Small Spot

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)

Finish off and cut yarn, leaving long tail for sewing

Sew the 3 spots to the mushroom cap
