Criss Cross Confetti Hat

We have had some cold snowy days the last few weeks in Utah, and to me that means it is the perfect time to sit down and crochet some hats. A few months ago I had picked up the new Red Heart Super Saver Speckles in 5 different colors with the plan to make hats with it. It took me a while to decided on a stitch pattern that I wanted to use because I knew with the speckled yarn the hats would be pretty busy so I needed to keep it simple. It is similar to working with variegated yarn, not every stitch works well with busy yarn. But I also wanted some texture so I played around with a few different stitches before finally deciding on one. 

The stitch I ultimately decided on for the main body of the hat is a crossed double crochet stitch. It is actually a stitch I really like for the texture and visual interest that it gives. This is definitely not the first time I have used this stitch in a hat pattern, but I typically combine it with other stitches for a different look. 

My Criss Cross Hat uses the crossed double crochet stitch alternated with a round of half double crochet in the third loop, which creates a sort of raised line in between the rounds of crossed doubles. My Crossed Doubles Hat is very similar, but it has three rounds of the half double in the third loop which gives it a wider band in between the crossed doubles. I also use it in my Aurora Hat pattern, but this one combines several double crochet stitch variations to create the pattern. A variation of the crossed double crochet stitch is even used in my most recent hat pattern the Mini Twist Hat. In that pattern the crossed doubles are also worked as  post stitches to create the twist in the cable. 

In this hat I used the crossed double crochet stitch alternated with rounds of single crochet. This is the same combination that I used on a crossed double crochet dishcloth and I liked the way it looked so I thought it would work well for a simple hat. 

I love the different ways that one stitch can be used to create different looks. I thought the stitch pattern was simple enough that it worked with the speckled yarn that you could still see the texture, but it wasn't so busy that it got completely lost. You could make it with solid yarn as well and would be able to see the texture even more. You could also add a faux fur pom pom to the top if desired. 

How to Crochet the Criss Cross Confetti Hat

You will need:

• Red Heart Super Saver Speckle (or similar medium weight yarn)
• I Crochet Hook (5.25 mm)
• Yarn Needle
• optional: Faux Fur Pom Pom

Instructions:

The Criss Cross Confetti Hat is worked from the top down, starting with a magic ring. Each hat has a middle section of crossed double crochet stitches and single crochet, then finished with a post stitch ribbing, made with alternating front and back post stitches. 

An optional faux fur pom pom can be added at the end. My favorite way to add a faux fur pom pom is to use an elastic loop pom pom, I sew a button to the inside of the hat, then pull the loop through to the inside of the hat and loop around the button. Check out this video for how to attach a faux fur pom pom.
