My family is planning a trip to Disneyland this month so we are busily trying to start getting things ready for the trip. This trip has been kind of crazy for me because the last time we went to Disneyland, about 4 years ago, we planned the trip way in advance and I made lots of Disney themed projects in preparation for the trip. We had several different t-shirts, the kids had drawstring backpacks and travel pillows that I made, and probably some other stuff that I am forgetting. This one was planned with a lot less time to prepare and it is coming just a couple weeks after Christmas which means up until just over a week ago that was my focus and now that I have time to think about the trip I don't really have time to make a bunch of stuff.
Even though I don't have a lot of time I thought I would still try to squeeze in a few little things. Disney stuff can be so expensive that making a few things ahead of time can be a less expensive way to have a few fun things to use on your trip. I found some water bottles at Walmart the other day for only $1 each. I thought they would make some fun water bottles that the kids could use either on the drive there, or in the park. They aren't insulated so they won't necessarily keep water cold, but they are kind of tall and skinny so I thought they would fit well in backpack pockets and cup holders. Plus they were super cheap so if they get lost or accidentally left behind it isn't a big deal.
I thought it would be fun to put different Disney characters on the bottles, rather than putting names on them, to keep them apart. Cricut Design Space has quite a few licensed images available, including a lot of Disney designs. There are a couple of things to keep in mind with the licensed images, 1- they are not included in the cost of Cricut Access so even if you have a subscription you will have to purchase the designs, but they are typically $1.99 so they aren't too expensive. I mean, even buying an image for each water bottle and factoring in the cost of vinyl each one still would have cost me less than $5 which still isn't bad. Cheaper than any souvenir in the park! But, another thing to keep in mind with purchasing the images is that once you buy it you have it, so it may be something you use again later, especially with something like a classic Mickey. I used that one on t-shirts for Christmas pajamas, and then again on a water bottle and only had to pay for it the first time. Once you pay for it you can use it as many times as you want. The other thing to remember is that they are still licenses designs so you can make stuff for your personal use, but not to sell. The licensed designs are not included in Cricut's angel policy that allows you to use their images to sell items, and to get all of the details on that you can read the policy, I am not an expert on that.
I wanted to do simple one layer outline type designs so I just searched for the different characters I was looking for and found images that would work for me. The Spiderman design was actually a multi-layer design, but the other layer was just a red circle behind the outline, I just deleted that part and it was just what I was looking for. So keep that in mind too, as you are looking at design options. You can always remove layers, or even use tools like slice and contour to make the designs what you want them to be.
The fun thing about a project like this is that there are so many characters to choose from, each person can choose a favorite. My 7 year old is so excited to see Avenger's Campus for the first time and go on the Spiderman ride because he is obsessed with all things Spiderman, so that was an obvious choice. My 10 year old's nickname is Bear so she has always loved any bear related things, including Winnie the Pooh. Mickey just seemed like one that had to be done. There are also princess images, all of the other Mickey friends, Star Wars, and lots of other characters to choose from.
And if you don't what to put them on water bottles like I did you could put them on shirts, bags, hats, you name it!
How to Cut Out Vinyl Character Decals with Cricut
You will need:
- Cricut (I used a Maker 3, but and Explore or Joy will work too)
- permanent vinyl (I used Cricut Smart Vinyl in Black)
- transfer tape
- water bottles (or something else to put the decals on)
Instructions:
Open Cricut Design Space and start a new project
To find the Licensed images that are available you can search for a specific character (Winnie the Pooh, Spiderman, Mickey) or you can filter to see the by either clicking on the licensed logos in the bottom right corner, or searching all images and filtering on the left side by the brand you want.

I looked for single layer, outline type designs because I knew I did not want to do any layers. You can also filter for that if you want.
Once you have found the images that you want just add the image to your canvas, edit if needed (to remove any layers, contour out unwanted parts, etc. Resize to the size you need. I made my decals 3" wide which was a little wider than the diameter of the bottle, but I wanted them to wrap just a little bit around the bottle.
Cut out the design. If you do not already own the image you will be prompted to pay when you go to cut the design.
Weed your design.
Use transfer tape to remove the decal from the backing and apply to the water bottle.
