Boxed Beads Dishcloth

It has been a while since I have posted a dishcloth pattern and the past couple of crochet patterns that I have posted have had me thinking about dishcloth patterns, because they have used stitches that I had previously used in a dishcloth. The Mossy Blocks Scarf used the same stitch pattern as the Mossy Blocks Dishcloth from last year, and the Criss Cross Confetti Hat used the same stitch pattern as my Crossed Doubles Dishcloth. 

This time I am going to switch it up though. Instead of sharing a hat or scarf pattern that used the same stitch I used in an earlier dishcloth pattern, this time I made a dishcloth based on a pattern I have used for hats. 

This cloth uses the boxed bead stitch, a variation of the bead stitch a stitch that is used in several of my patterns. I have a hat pattern using the boxed bead stitch, in both bulky and worsted weight yarns. I made a dishcloth using the bead stitch, and the only real difference between that one and this is an extra double crochet in between the "beads". It does really change up the look of the pattern though, just adding that extra stitch. 

With the bead stitch you just have a row of beads that are made by working a sort of sideways puff stitch, and with the boxed bead stitch those beads are separated and "boxed in" by a double crochet on either side and a row of single crochets above and below. It gives it more of a grid type effect. 

This dishcloth is an easy way to try out the boxed bead stitch, and in the end you have a pretty dishcloth or washcloth that you can use.

How to Crochet the Boxed Beads Dishcloth

Finished size: approximately 8.5" square

You will need:

• 1 ball cotton yarn (sample made with Dishie in Lilac Mist)
• H crochet hook (5mm)
• yarn needle

Instructions: 

Special Stitch

Bead Stitch: the Bead Stitch is basically a puff stitch worked around the post of the dc next to it, In this boxed version you will work a dc stitch between each Bead Stitch (separate from the dc post you work the puff stitch around)

dc in first stitch, yo, insert hook around post of dc, pull up a loop, yo, insert hook around post, pull up a loop, yo, insert hook around post, pull up loop, yo, pull through all loops on hook, skip next stitch

I have a video tutorial of the Bead Stitch, but it is not the Boxed Bead Stitch so it does not include the extra double crochet stitch in between.  You can find that video tutorial HERE.

This dishcloth starts with a multiple of 3+2 chains

Dishcloth

ch 32

Row 1: sc in second ch from and each ch to the end (31 sc)

Row 2: ch 3 (counts as first dc), turn, [work bead stitch starting in next st (dc in first stitch, yo, insert hook around post of dc, pull up a loop, yo, insert hook around post, pull up a loop, yo, insert hook around post, pull up loop, yo, pull through all loops on hook, skip next stitch), dc in next st] repeat to end of row (10 beads, 11 dc)

Row 3: ch 1, turn, sc in each st to the end (31 sc)

Repeat rows 2 and 3 - 8 more times or until you have a square, then continue on to the border round

Border: ch 1, turn 90 degrees so you are working down the side, sc evenly along the side, 3 sc in corner, sc in each st across the bottom, 3 sc in corner, sc evenly up the other side, 3 sc in corner, sc in each st across the top, 2 more sc in corner where you started, sl st to first sc to join

Finish off and weave in ends
