Small Squares Patchwork Table Runner

I have been meaning to make a share this project for quite a while but life has been busy and I just haven't been able to get as much posted as I would like. As a result this may look like kind of a weird project to be sharing on Valentine's Day, because it looks like a Valentine's project so it is a little late to be sharing. However, although I made mine with Valentine fabric it isn't really a holiday specific project and you could make it in any color scheme, for any holiday, to match your kitchen or whatever room you are using it in, or just using a charm pack that you like the colors of. 

I made a table runner back in the fall that was reversible, one side for fall and one side for Halloween, and I kind of liked having that seasonal touch on my table and I thought it would be fun to make some more for different holidays. I had plans for a Christmas one but I had so many Christmas projects that I didn't get around to it, so I wanted to make sure to get the Valentine's one made.

Like I said there is nothing specifically valentines themed about this other than the fabrics I chose, just like the reversible one was only fall/halloween because of the fabrics I used for that one. For this one I used one charm pack, in this case My Valentine by Riley Blake that I got from Missouri Star Quilt Company. 

In addition to the charm pack you will need a 1/2 yarn of fabric for the backing, thin batting, and binding.

For this table runner I wanted smaller squares than the the size of the charm squares so I cut them into quarters, into 4- 2.5" squares each. Then I laid them out in a scrappy way, no specific pattern, just trying to spread the colors and prints out. 

I made my table runner 14" x 28", 7 squares by 14 squares. My charm pack had 42 squares, which is pretty standard, and I needed 98 small squares total, which meant about 25 of the charm squares. That means if you use the whole pack you could make a bigger table runner if you wanted to, almost twice as big. But that was the size I wanted to go with, I like table runners that fit just in the center of the table since we need seats all the way around and I want it out of that way of place settings. 

The smaller squares mean a little bit more sewing than if you left them the full size, but I love the scrappiness that it gives, and the whole project is still small enough that it works up pretty quick. I love the quilty touch that it adds to my table.

How to Make the Small Squares Patchwork Table Runner

Finished size: 14" x 28"

You will need:

• one charm pack, at least 25 squares (sample made with My Valentine)
• 1/2 yard fabric for backing (sample made with muslin)
• thin batting slightly larger than 14"x 28" (sample made with Warm & Natural)
• 1/4 yard fabric (or 2- 2.5" strips x wof) for binding (sample made with 2 strips from Kimberbell Basics Be Mine Jelly Roll)
• coordinating thread
• rotary cutter, ruler, mat
• sewing machine

Instructions:

Cut 25 charm squares into quarters to get 100- 2.5" squares

Layout in a scrappy pattern making 7 rows of 14 squares each

Sew the squares into rows

Sew the rows together

Cut a piece of backing and batting slightly larger than the finished table runner and baste the backing, batting, and top together

Quilt the layers together, I used a stitch in the ditch method along the long rows

Trim off the excess batting and backing

Bind the table runner to finish
