It is Day 2 of the Pond Pals Mini Amigurumi Crochet Along. Yesterday was a dragonfly and today an adorable little ant joins the pond pals.

I mentioned yesterday that the idea for this crochet along first started out as bugs, then evolved to include birds and other animals, so there are going to be a more bugs than other things, about half of the animals are bugs, but I did try to space them out so there aren't bugs several days in a row. So even though there are 2 in a row with yesterday and today that won't always be the case. You can expect something different tomorrow, not a bug.

The little ant was an interesting one to make, the body shape is just so different than anything I have made before. I was nervous about whether or not I could get it to look the way I wanted with the 3 separate sections, but I am really happy with the way it turned out.

One thing that I will say is that you do want to make sure you stuff each section as you go because it gets pretty tight in-between the sections so you won't really be able to stuff the head once you are working on the body, or so on.

The finished ant is about 4 inches long from the top of the head to the end of the body. I wanted to make a black ant, but when I am making these mini amigurumi I have found that I really don't like to use actual black yarn for my black things because since I use black safety eyes and black embroidery floss for my faces black yarn makes it really hard to see those faces. Because of that I usually choose a dark charcoal gray instead. This gives a similar effect to the black but without the starkness and also you can see the faces a little better. If you don't want to make a black (or charcoal gray) ant, red and brown would also be great choices.

How to Crochet an Adorable Ant

Finished Size about 4" long

You will need:

Instructions:

The body/head is made starting with a magic ring. The antennae and legs are made starting with a chain and working back down the chain mostly with slip stitches.

*Note: be sure to stuff the body sections as you go, the transitions between sections are skinny and will make it hard to stuff a previous section once you have moved on to the next.

Body/Head

Make 1 in body color, beginning with magic ring

Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)
Rounds 4-6: 1 sc in each st (18 sc)

Add safety eyes between rounds 3 and 4 with a few stitches in between (I put them almost to the side of the head, maybe 5 stitches in between)

Begin stuffing and continue stuffing as you work

Round 7: [sc2tog, sc in next st] repeat around (12 sc)
Round 8: sc2tog around (6 sc)
Round 9: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Rounds 10-12: 1 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 13: sc2tog around (6 sc)
Round 14: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 15: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 16: [sc2tog, sc in next 4 sts] repeat around (15 sc)
Round 17: [sc2tog, sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (12 sc)
Round 18: [sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (9 sc)
Round 19: [sc2tog, sc in next st] repeat around (6 sc)

Finish off, weave in ends

Stitch a small smile below the eyes

sew antennae to the top of the head
