Today is Day 11 of the Pond Pals Mini Amigurumi Crochet Along. Crazy that tomorrow is already the last day. Today's mini animal is a Little Ladybug.
When I first came up with the idea for a bug themed crochet along a ladybug was one of the first bugs on the list, I think it was probably a ladybug, bee, and butterfly that were kind of the must do's, first ones I wrote down. Then I had a bunch of others that some stayed and some got taken off, especially as I decided to switch from just bugs to bugs and birds, and then eventually to the Pond Pals theme that included a couple other animals. But those first 3 were there to stay and definitely made the cut.
The little ladybug is made kind of similar to the turtle from earlier in the crochet along. At least in the construction of the body.
I made the ladybug in a crawling form, because I feel like that is how you most often see them, so I made a little red shell similar to the turtle. Then I added some stitching down the middle to separate the shell into the 2 wings. I used surface slip stitch to do this, finishing off with a couple embroidery stitches once the shell was attached to the belly, but if you prefer you could just embroider the line on the shell after it is all assembled. An embroidered chain stitch will give the same effect of the surface slip stitch. Last but not least I added a few little black dots to the shell, because a ladybug needs spots. The little head is sewn onto the front of the shell with its little antennae, and it has 6 tiny legs underneath.
The Little Ladybug is about 4 inches long, and joins the Dragonfly, Ant, Hummingbird, Worm, Turtle, Bee, Mallard, Butterfly, Frog, and Bluebird. Only 1 animal left to go!

How to Crochet a Little Ladybug
Finished Size about 4" long
You will need:
- Worsted weight yarn in red and black (Sample made with Red Heart Super Saver in Cherry Red, and Charcoal)
- G crochet hook (4/4.25 mm)
- 2- 6mm safety eyes
- black embroidery floss and needle
- stuffing
- yarn needle
- stitch markers
- scissors
Instructions:
All of the pieces are made beginning with a magic ring except the legs and antennae. The belly is attached to the shell by working through the shell and belly layers. The head, legs, antennae, and spots are sewn to the body. The line down the shell can either be made using surface slip stitch (this has to be done before attaching the shell to the belly so you can have your working yarn in the inside, because of this you have to finish the last couple of stitches with embroidery after it is stitched together) or you can use embroidered chain stitches to get the same effect, for a thinner line you could just embroider a backstitch.
Belly
Make 1 with black yarn, beginning with magic ring
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 4: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (24 sc)
Round 5: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (30 sc)
Finish off, set aside to attach to shell in next step
Shell
Make 1 with red yarn, beginning with magic ring
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 4: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (24 sc)
Round 5: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (30 sc)
Rounds 6-8: 1 sc in each st (30 sc)
Leave yarn attached, if you want to stitch the line on the shell using surface slip stitch do that at this point, pick the side of the shell you want as the front and start your surface sl st a row or two above the edge (this will be covered by the head), then sl st in a straight line across the middle, ending just above the edge (so you can work the next round), leave a long tail attached to allow you to finish the last stitches after attaching shell to belly. If you are embroidering the line you can wait until after the shell is attached.
Place belly in opening of shell, in next round work through both layers, round 8 of the shell and round 5 of the belly
Stuff as you close the opening so that it is fully stuffed by the time you finish the next round
Round 9: 1 sc in each st around working through both the shell and body (30 sc)
Finish off and weave in end
If you previously stitched the line on the shell thread the tail on your needle and make another stitch or two to get to the edge of the shell. If embroidering the whole line you can do that at this point using the stitch of your choice.

Rounds 4-5: 1 sc in each st (18 sc)
