Last week I shared a new scarf pattern, the Trinity Stripe Cowl, and today I have the matching hat, the Trinity Stripe Hat. Both patterns are part of the Scarf and Hat or the month put on by Oombawka Design and the Stitching Mommy. Each month they both share new hat and scarf designs, as well as having a guest designer, which this month is me!

Be sure to check out their 2 new hat patterns as well, the Aria Beanie, and the Moorland Puff Stitch Hat. All three of the PDF patterns will be available for free on Ravelry for the next 24 hours (through the end of the day Monday 5/28/24). To get the free PDF for the Trinity Stripe Hat just add the pattern to your cart and the discounted price (free) will show up through the end of the promotion. After tomorrow the PDF will be available for purchase at regular price.

For the scarf and hat combo that I made for this crochet along I made a matching set based on a couple other hat designs that I have, kind of a mashup of a couple different patterns I have made in the past. The idea for this design combined the stitches used in my Trinity Hat pattern which uses the same trinity stitch that I use in this hat, with the alternating stitch pattern that I used in several previous hats, like the String of Beads and Criss Cross Hats that use stripes of a patterned stitch and half double crochet stitches worked in the third loop. So for this hat I took that same alternating striped pattern and replaced the bead stitch, or crossed double, or whatever other stitches I used in those sections with a couple rounds of trinity stitch.

This hat is made top down with the top section of increase rounds made in double crochet, then the main body of the hat made in the trinity stitch stripe pattern, then it is finished off with a post stitch ribbing.

I made 5 sizes, which is pretty standard for most of my hat patterns, Adult, Child, Toddler, Baby 6-12 Months, and Baby 3-6 Months. The smaller hats have only one round of trinity stitch between the half double crochet rounds in order to try to maintain the pattern but also make them small enough for little heads.

As I mentioned in my scarf post, I used Caron Cakes for my hats. I was able to make all 5 hats and a cowl out of 2 Caron Cakes, so you can get multiple hats out of one cake. How many depends on the size of hats you are making. For the most part I went with the flow of the yarn to determine striping, but because of the joins in the round I don't particularly like when the color changes in the middle of a round so when I could tell I wouldn't make another round I would sometimes cut the yarn and switch to the next color. Whether or not you force the stripes to end with full rounds or let it change color anywhere is up to you, it is completely personal preference.

  1. I'm excited to try this pattern. I like the stitch patterns used and the yarn. I don't see an active link to Ravelry.
