Today is Day 3 of the Little Dinos Summer 2024 Mini Amigurumi Crochet Along, and today is the first day that is not a dinosaur. The majority of the patterns included in this set will be dinosaurs, but there are a couple that are kind of dinosaur adjacent, but not dinosaurs, and that is the case today with the Little Volcano.

I knew when I decided on the dinosaur theme I wanted to make a little volcano in addition to the dinosaurs. I remember getting little sets of plastic dinosaurs when I was a kid and most of the time they just came with a bunch of little dinosaurs and a really thin plastic playmat, that tore really easily, that had a volcano in the middle, but one of the sets I remember came with a little volcano, some rocks, and some palm trees and I thought that was pretty cool. So I guess for nostalgic reasons I wanted to include a volcano in this set.

The volcano is one of the few patterns in this set that you really are going to want to use specific colors. The dinosaurs I have been making in all different colors, but for the volcano I wanted to stick with a brown for the mountain part, red or orange for the lava, and white for the smoke. I still used yarn from the Red Heart Super Saver Super Craft Kit that I am using for this whole set of dinosaurs. The reason I recommended either the pastel or original versions is because they both included a variation of those three colors. I am using the pastel set so I used Oatmeal for the mountain/volcano, Coral for the lava, and Soft White for the smoke.

The volcano is made in 3 separate pieces, same as the different colors, the mountain/volcano, the lava, and the smoke. The lava is made by crocheting a chain and then working slip stitches or single crochets into that chain making the drips and then that process is repeated all the way around. The top of the volcano is left open and the lava is sewn around that open edge, the smoke cloud fits inside the opening and is sewn in place.

This little volcano marks a quarter way through,  3 patterns down with 9 more to go. Come back tomorrow for pattern number 4.

How to Crochet a Little Volcano

Finished Size about 4.5" tall

You will need:

Instructions:

The volcano and smoke are made beginning with a magic ring. The lava is created by making a ring of chain stitches, then crocheting around that and every few stitches making a chain coming off of the ring and working single crochet or slip stitches into those chains to create the drips. The lava is stitched around the opening at the top of the volcano and the smoke fits just inside the opening and is stitched in place to secure it.

Lava

Make 1 with orange or red yarn, beginning with a chain (sample made in Coral)

ch 18, sl st to first ch to join in a ring
Round 1: sc in first ch, (ch 4, working back along that ch sk 1st ch, sl st in next 3), sc in next 2 sts on original ch, (ch 4, working back along that ch sk 1st ch, sc in next 3), sc in next 3 sts on original ch, (ch 3, working back along that ch sk 1st ch, sl st in next 2), sc in next 2 sts on original ch, (ch 4, working back along that ch sk 1st ch, sl st in next 3), sc in next 3 sts on original ch, (ch 5, working back along that ch sk 1st ch, sc in next 4), sc in next 3 sts on original ch, (ch 3, working back along that ch sk 1st ch, sl st in next 2), sc in next 3 sts on original ch, (ch 2, working back along that ch sk 1st ch, sl st in next 1), sc in last st of original ch

Finish off, leaving long tail for sewing

Place the lava ring around the opening of the volcano and stitch in place. You may want to play around with the placement a little to decide which drips you want on the face side and to make sure none of them are covering the eyes (unless that is the look you want)

Stuff the smoke cloud completely, the stick the open end of the smoke just inside the open end of the volcano (which should also be fully stuffed) and stitch in place using the tail left from the end of the volcano or you can use the tail from the lava that you just used to stitch the lava in place.
