Pumpkin Spice Hat

It is finally fall, although it doesn't yet feel like it where I live, but that means it is time to start making all of the cold weather crochet projects. Hats, scarves, blankets, etc. Of all of those different projects hats are probably my favorite, although I do enjoy making all of them. 

A few years ago I made a series of hats that worked well with variegated yarns, although they could definitely be made in solid colors too, and that is the case with this pattern too. The idea for this hat pattern was inspired by a fall color way of variegated yarn. I thought it would be fun to make a fall project with it, but variegated yarns can be hard to use in a way that doesn't just look super busy. I love fall colors, but I didn't want to make a project that just looked like fall threw up all of its colors, so I came up with a pattern that used it as an accent combined with solid colors. 

This pattern combines puff stitches made in a contrasting color with single and half double crochet stitches, some of which are worked into a row below to surround the puff stitches. This gives the effect of the puff stitches popping out of the other color. 

That separation of the puff stitches is what I think allows this hat to work with the variegated yarn. Rather than a big section that is a mess of different colors, it is just small puffs poking out between the solid. It breaks up that colorful yarn in a way that is much more pleasing. 

 I obviously went with a fall theme for this hat pattern. Starting with a yarn that had fall colors (Red Heart Super Saver in Fall), then pairing it with different fall colored solids (tan, orange, gold, green, and dark red). But you could make this hat with two contrasting solids, or another variegated with a coordinating solid, or you could even just make it in one solid color and let the texture stand for itself. 

I made 5 sizes, which is pretty standard for most of my hat patterns, Adult, Child, Toddler, Baby 6-12 Months, and Baby 3-6 Months. 

I finished the hat off with a post stitch ribbing. I didn't add pom poms to these hats, but I think a faux fur pom pom would look really nice and fit well with the fall vibe of the hats. 

How to Crochet a Pumpkin Spice Hat

You will need:

• worsted weight yarn in 2 colors (Samples made with Red Heart Super Saver in Fall Stripe, Buff, Gold, Carrot, Medium Thyme, and Claret) 
• I crochet hook (5.5 mm)
• yarn needle
• scissors

Instructions:

Beginning chain does not count as a stitch

Gauge: 

4 rounds of dc (40 dc) = 4.5"

Special Stitches

puff stitch: [yo, insert hook, pull up a loop] 3 times, yo, pull through all 7 loops on the hook

*Note: on the puff stitch rounds you will work a puff stitch in one stitch, then ch 1 and skip the next stitch before working a puff in the next stitch. In the single/half double crochet rounds you will work the single crochet stitches in the top of the puff stitch, then work a half double crochet into the skipped stitch from the previous round enclosing the ch stitch in the half double crochet and creating a separation between the puff stitches.

Do not cut yarn between puff stitch rounds and main color rounds. You can just carry it inside so that you have less ends to weave in.
