It is Day 2 of the Little Nativity Mini Amigurumi Crochet Along. Yesterday, Day 1, was Mary so it only seemed right for today to be Little Joseph.
One thing that is a little bit different about this crochet along theme compared to any of the others I have done is that this one is a set that has very specific people/animals/things. Instead of just 12 random Christmas items or halloween items or animals that fit a specific theme, this time you can probably guess exactly the 12 designs that will be included. Or at least pretty close. The order is the only real surprise, but even that is a little less random this time, it is probably not too surprising to have Joseph come after Mary. Also I tried to make all of the pieces in this set a little bit more proportional than some of the others. They are little crocheted pieces so definitely not perfectly proportional, but closer than last year when the robin was the same size as the deer.
Joseph uses a couple more colors than Mary, and has a few more pieces, but they are all still pretty small and simple. I used 6 colors all together- a skin tone/tan color (I used Loops & Thread Impeccable in Almond), a beard color (I used Loops & Threads Soft Classic in Dark Taupe), and 4 colors for the clothing, one for the main clothes color, one for the robe, one for the head cover, and a little bit of the last color for a rope around the head cover. Just like with Mary these colors could really be any color you want to use. I chose to use a darker tan color, 2 shades of green, and kind of a creamy color (Loops & Threads Impeccable in Soft Taupe Tweed and Laurel, Red Heart Super Saver in Light Sage, and Loops & Threads Soft Classic in Mushroom). Joseph only has safety eyes for a face, no embroidered mouth because his beard covers the mouth area.

How to Crochet a Little Joseph
Finished Size about 4" tall
You will need:
- Worsted weight yarn in 6 colors- skin tone, hair color, and 4 colors for clothing (Sample made with Loops & Threads Impeccable in Almond, Laurel, and Soft Taupe Tweed, and Loops & Threads Soft Classic in Dark Taupe, and Mushroom, and Red Heart Super Saver in Light Sage)
- G crochet hook (4/4.25 mm)
- 2- 6mm safety eyes
- stuffing
- yarn needle
- stitch markers
- scissors
- optional: if you want to add weighted bases to you figures you will need some scrap fabric and Poly-Pellets
Instructions:
Most of the pieces are made beginning with a magic ring. The only exceptions are the rope for the head covering, which is just a chain, the beard, and the robe, which is worked back and forth in rows.
*If you want to add weighted bases to the bottom of your figures you can cut out a circle of fabric about 3" in diameter, work a running stitch all the way around the outside edge, cinch it to make a little bowl shape, add a little bit of poly-pellets to the circle, then cinch closed. The base of the figure is only about 1.5" in diameter so it needs to be kept pretty small. If using a weighted base place it in the bottom of the figure when the pattern says to begin stuffing, the continue with stuffing. This does help keep your figures upright easier but is an optional step. Below is a video that shows the process, just keep in mind that this one would need to be a lot smaller than the one in the video.

Body/Head
Make 1 starting with inner robe color/darker tan, changing to skin tone/tan where directed, beginning with magic ring
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 4: 1 sc in blo of each st (18 sc)
Rounds 5-9: 1 sc in each st (18 sc)
Begin stuffing and continue stuffing as you work
Round 10: [sc2tog, sc in next 4 sts] repeat around (15 sc)
Round 11: [sc2tog, sc in next 3 sts] repeat around (12 sc)
Round 12: [sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (9 sc)
Change to sink tone/tan yarn
Round 13: 2 sc in each st (18 sc)
Round 14: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (24 sc)
Rounds 15-18: 1 sc in each st (24 sc)
Round 19: [sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (18 sc)
Insert safety eyes between rounds 16 and 17 about 3 stitches apart
Stich a small smile below the eyes
Round 20: [sc2tog, sc in next st] repeat around (12 sc)
Round 21: sc2tog around (6 sc)
Finish off, weave in ends
Robe
Make 1 with robe color/light green yarn, beginning with a chain and working back and forth in rows
Beginning chain counts as a double crochet
Chain 18
Row 1: 1 dc in fourth ch from hook (first 3 ch count as first dc), 1 dc in each stitch to the end (16 dc)
Row 2: ch 3, turn, dc in first st (same as turning ch), 1 dc in next 14 sts, 2 dc in last st (18 dc)
Row 3: ch 3, turn, 1 dc in each st to the end (18 dc)
Row 4: ch 3, turn, 1 dc in each st to the end (18 dc)
Finish off and cut yarn, leaving long tail for sewing
Wrap the robe around the body with the opening in front and the shorter row (row 1) around the neck, stitch in place (I tacked it in place around the neck as well as s few other spots just to keep it where I wanted it).
Arms
Make 2 starting with skin tone/tan yarn and changing to robe color/lighter green where directed, beginning with a magic ring
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
change to robe color/lighter green yarn
Rounds 2-5: 1 sc in each st (6 sc)
Finish off and cut yarn leaving a long tail for sewing
Sew the two arms to the sides of the body.
Beard
Make 1 with beard color/brown yarn, beginning with a magic ring
ch 12
Row 1: 1 sc in second ch from the hook, 1 sc in next st, [sc, 2 hdc] in next st, 1 dc in next 5 sts, [2 hdc, sc] in next st, sc in next 2 sts
Finish off and cut yarn leaving long tail for sewing
Sew to the face so it sits just below the eyes with the ends on either side of the eyes.
Head Cover
Make 1 with head cover color/darker green yarn, beginning with a magic ring, then working back and forth in rows
Round 1: in mr, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sc)
Round 3: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around (18 sc)
Round 4: [2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around (24 sc)
Rounds 5-7: 1 sc in each st (24 sc)
at this point you will start working back and forth in rows rather than rounds
Row 8: 1 sc in next 16 sts (16 sc)
Rows 9-14: ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each st (16 sc)
Finish off and cut yarn leaving a long tail for sewing
Place the head covering on top of the head and stitch in place to secure it to the head
Rope
Make 1 with rope color/cream yarn, beginning with a magic ring
ch 25, or number needed to wrap around the head covering, you may need more or less depending on how tight you crochet but you want the ends to just meet when you wrap it around
Wrap the rope around the head covering and tie the ends together, then make a couple of stitches around to tack in place. Weave in ends.
