I wanted to make a quick crochet project that could be used for Valentine's Day and I decided I wanted to make a little pouch that could be filled with treats. I have a couple of these on my blog from previous years and I decided that this time I wanted to make something that could work for Valentine's Day, but not be only for Valentine's Day.
The other little treat bags I have made are heart shaped or have a heart on them so they definitely have more of a Valentine's specific vibe. This time I chose to go for a design that could be used anytime, for any holiday or occasion, but just make it in Valentine colors.
I decided on a simple granny square design made with 2 granny squares. You will start by making 2 granny squares, I used 2-3 colors for mine, then crochet them together around 3 sides and add a few more rounds around the top to finish it off. Then add a little drawstring and you have a cute little pouch that could be filled with treats or a small gift.
The granny squares are 3 rounds and I used medium weight acrylic yarn to make them. I did one sample in 2 colors alternating color a, color b, color a, and then finishing with color a. I made a second sample with three colors making each round a different color and using the final round color to finish the bag.
How to Crochet Granny Square Drawstring Treat Bag
You will need:
- medium weight yarn in 2-3 colors (sample made with Loops and Threads Soft Classic in Mushroom and Blush, and Loops and Threads Impeccable in Claret)
- H crochet hook (5mm)
- yarn needle
Instructions:
Make 2 identical granny squares
ch 5, join to make circle
Round 1: ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in circle, [ch 2, 3 dc in circle] 3 times, ch 2, sl st to beginning ch to join, finish off, cut yarn (12 dc, 4 ch sp)
Round 2: join new color in any corner, ch 3 ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in same corner, [ch 2, 3 dc in same corner space, ch 1, 3 dc in next corner space] 3 times, ch 2, 3 dc in same corner space, ch 1, sl st to beginning ch 3 to join, finish off, cut yarn (24 dc, 8 ch sp)
Round 3: join new color in any corner, ch 3 ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in same corner, [ch 2, 3 dc in same corner space, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next corner space] 3 times, ch 2, 3 dc in same corner space, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch sp, ch 1, sl st to beginning ch 3 to join (36 dc, 12 ch sp)
At this point you will have your 2 granny squares, you can either finish them both off, cut your yarn, and weave in all of your ends, or you can leave the yarn attached to one square and continue working from that point to join the squares and make the pouch.
Joining round: To start either slip stitch on your last granny square until you reach the corner if continuing with your working yarn, or if you finished off your squares join your new yarn in the corner of one square,
ch 1, holding both squares together wrong sides to the inside, sc in the ch sp working through both layer (and continuing to do so in this whole round), work 1 sc in each stitch and ch sp down the side to the corner, 3 sc in the corner space, 1 sc in each st/sp across bottom, 3 sc in corner sp, 1 sc in each st/sp up the side ending with 1 sc in the corner sp (41 sc)
Top Round 1: continue with working yarn but now you will be working through just 1 layer around the opening at the top of the pouch you just created, ch 3 (counts as first dc), 1 dc in same corner space as end of last round, 1 dc in each st/sp across the top of the first square ending with 1 dc in corner space where joining round started, 1 dc in side of first sc from joining round, turn your pouch so you are working along the top edge of the second square, 1 dc in first corner space, 1 dc in each st/sp across the square ending with 1 dc in last corner space, sl st to beginning ch to join (28 dc)
Top Round 2: ch 4 (counts as first dc and ch 1), sk next st, [dc in next st, ch 1, sk] repeat around, sl st to 3rd ch in beginning ch to join (14 dc, 14 ch sp)
Top Round 3: ch 1, sc in first st, sk ch sp, 5 dc in next st, sk next ch sp, [sc in next st, sk ch sp, 5 dc in next st, sk next ch sp] repeat around, sl st to first sc to join
Finish off, weave in ends
Tie
For the tie you can use a ribbon or string of any kind but I chose to just chain a length long enough to weave around the edge of the pouch and tie. I chained 50 chains using one of the colors used in my pouches, just make sure the chain is long enough to weave around and have a little bit of a tail on each side. I just pull the ends of the chain tight and trimmed the ends to an even length
Weave the tie through the spaces in top round 2, fill with whatever little treats you want, then tie closed
