For the 3rd book of my 3rd Annual Book Inspired Craft Week I chose The Lightning Thief- the first book in the series Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Honestly, Percy Jackson has been on my list since the first year I did this series, but has gotten bumped for other books. Choosing the books to highlight is the hardest part for me, there are just too many to choose from.

The reason this one has been on my list is because this book was the book that my oldest son read that got him to enjoy reading. Before this series he wasn't super interested in reading for fun, but he read this book, loved it, and then went on to devour the series. And the great part is that then there was another series, The Heroes of Olympus, and then he went on to read the Kane Chronicles. He is now a senior in high school and he is planning to study history, and I think one of the parts of history that he is most interested in is ancient civilizations and I think that started by reading a story involving greek gods and their demigod children.

When I was trying to think of a project to make to go along with this book I was thinking I would like to do something using the symbols of the different geek gods. In fact one of the reasons that this book kept getting bumped off of my list and replaced with another is because I couldn't decide exactly what I wanted to do. I played around with a few ideas, t-shirts, hats, bookmarks, etc. I just couldn't decide what direction I wanted to go.

Then I thought that since one of the major settings of the book is Camp Half-Blood, I thought why not do a camp craft. I thought painted rocks would be a fun way to add the greek symbols and elements in a summer camp craft kind of way.

This is a super simple project, as all camp crafts should be in my opinion, and you only need a few supplies. I chose to make a few different designs using the gods symbols, as well as some Camp Half-Blood themed rocks, but there are lots of different designs you could do to go along with the book.

Instructions:

This is one of those projects that doesn't really need a lot of instruction, basically just paint the rocks in any way you want, but here are a few design ideas and tips for painting your rocks.

Greek Demigod painted rock ideas:

Symbols of the Greek Gods
  • Zeus- Lightning Bolt
  • Poseidon- Trident
  • Hades- the Helm of Darkness
  • Athena- Owl
  • Dionysus- Grapes
  • Hermes- Cadeceus
  • Ares- Spear and Helmet
  • Artemis- Bow and Arrow
  • Demeter- Wheat
  • Apollo- Lyre
  • and more
Camp Half-Blood name or symbol (pegasus)
Names or other words written in an ancient greek style writing (look up Greek font for ideas)
Monsters in the books- Minotaur, Medusa, etc.
Other characters or items- winged shoes, rainbow (for iris messages), lotus (for the casino), pen or sword (Riptide), etc.
Greek Key or other greek designs

Tips for painted rocks:

Acrylic craft paints are perfect for painting rocks and you can get them in any color, I chose to stick with orange (for Camp Half-Blood), black, and white

You can either paint just the top of the rock or the whole thing, painting just the top makes it easier because you always have a dry bottom to set down

Paint pens are best for details, they are a lot easier to control than tiny paintbrushes, especially with the sometimes uneven surface of the rock.
