It is later than I planned, it has taken me a long time to decide on a theme and figure out how I wanted to make the pieces this time, but I am excited to announce that it is finally time for another Mini Amigurumi Crochet Along, the Spring 2025 Mini Amiguurmi Crochet Along. I had several ideas for what I wanted to do for this year's spring crochet along and was debating between a few themes, but as I was considering different themes I realized that for the past 2 years the spring CAL has been all animal themed. 2 years ago the theme was Farm Animals and included 12 little animals you may find on a farm, and last year was Pond Pals and included 12 little animals like birds, bugs, and other creatures you make find around a pond. I figured I may as well keep the pattern going and do another animal themed crochet along for this spring. The theme I chose is...
I had this theme on my list of ideas for a long time, but I think that it really jumped to the top of the list in January when we took our oldest son on a trip to Disney World. My son has always loved animals and was really excited for our visit to Animal Kingdom, and it turned out to be probably my favorite part of the trip as well. One of my favorite things was the safari where you drive through the wildlife reserve and see a bunch of the animals. It was fun to see the animals roaming around, I don't think I had ever seen a giraffe running around before! I am not usually a big animal person but I loved it. I had a few other animal themes I was seriously considering but the Safari theme kept jumping to the top of the list so I finally decided that was the one I was going to go with.
Another thing that kind of held me up when I was planning this CAL is deciding how I wanted to make the animals. In the farm animal set they are all in what I call "teddy bear style", sitting up with little arms and legs like a teddy bear (or sometimes wings and feet), but in the pond pals and dinosaur sets I made them, I don't know that you could really say realistic, but animals that are on all 4 legs were on all 4 legs more like there actual shape. I wasn't sure which way I wanted to do the safari animals and went back and forth between the 2 styles for a long time. I finally decided to go with the teddy bear style similar to the farm animals set. This means that the animals will all have very similar body and head pieces, with different arms/wings, legs/feet, ears, tails, noses/beaks, etc. to turn that basic body shape into the different animals. There are a couple that have some minor changes to the body, but they are still based on the same basic shape. Since this is a mini amigurumi crochet along, as usual all of the animals will be small- between about 3"-4" sitting.
So now for the crochet along details:
When- The 2025 Spring Mini Amigurumi Crochet Along will begin on Monday, May 5. It will run for 2 weeks, ending on May 17. One pattern will be released each day from Monday-Saturday, with no new pattern on Sunday.
How Does it Work- A new pattern will be released each day of the crochet along for a Mini Amigurumi that fits the theme (in this case Safari animals). The pattern will be posted for free on my blog, where it will remain indefinitely, this means that you can join or start up at any time, even after the crochet along is over. I will post the link to the new pattern each day on social media, as well as at the end of this post (this will be sort of a landing page for the crochet along). Once all 12 patterns have been posted I will release an ebook that will be available for purchase on Etsy and Ravelry that will include all 12 patterns. This is a great option for anyone who wants an ad-free, printable, PDF version of the patterns with all 12 in one place, but they will still remain free on my blog on their individual posts.
What do you need- Now let's talk supplies. The main thing you will need for the crochet along is yarn, obviously. This crochet along will include 12 safari/African animals so plan on a lot of neutral colors, lots of shades of brown and tan, some grey, etc. I always use worsted weight acrylic yarn for my mini amigurumi. In addition to the yarn you will need your usual crochet supplies like a hook and needle. I also use safety eyes for my little animals, but that is optional and you can embroider the eyes if you prefer. See the full list of supplies below.
You will need:
- worsted weight acrylic yarn in a variety of colors, Like I said above, these will be animals you would see on an African safari so plan on some browns, tans, grays, black, white, green, etc. For this crochet along I am using Loops & Threads Impeccable, but I have also used things like Red Heart Super Saver, Big Twist Value Worsted, Lion Brand Basic Stitch, or any other similar worsted weight yarn
- G crochet hook (4/4.25 mm)
- 6 mm safety eyes (if you don't want to use safety eyes you can embroider them instead)
- stuffing
- embroidery floss and needle (I mainly use black, but you may also use other colors like pink or red for mouths if you prefer)
- yarn needle
- stitch markers
