Easter is just around the corner and I have several patterns to share in the week or so leading up to it. To start off I have a little crocheted bunny pattern. These little bunnies are only about 7" tall standing, 5" tall sitting, so they are the perfect little size to stick in an Easter basket and they work up pretty fast.
This pattern actually came about because last month I made a baby blanket as part of my Book Inspired Craft Week. It was made with Red Heart Super Saver Bitty Stripes in a pastel rainbow color. I bought 3 skeins of yarn for that blanket not knowing if 2 would be enough and not wanting to run out. I ended up using almost 2 full skeins, with a tiny ball of the second skein leftover plus the third unused skein.
One day shortly after finishing that blanket I was sitting in my room and I saw that little leftover ball of yarn that I had not yet put away and I thought it would be good for an Easter project, but it was such a small amount I knew it needed to be something small. So I picked it up and started crocheting. It turned out that tiny ball didn't end up being enough and I had to pull out the third skein in order to finish the first little bunny. Then after I made one little rainbow bunny I had to make another to see how the rainbow turned out starting in a different place in the color pattern. And since I had already had to pull out the third skein there wasn't anything stopping me. Then I went ahead and made a third just to see how that one turned out.
That is one of the things that I think is kind of fun about self-striping yarn like that, You don't know exactly how the colors will turn out, so it is always kind of a fun surprise. That being said, you can totally make these little bunnies with a solid color too. I used a contrasting color for the nose piece and for the paws, but you could use just one color for everything and it would look cute that way too. I originally added the contrast in an attempt to stretch my little ball, but ended up running out anyway.
How to Crochet a Little Spring Bunny
You will need:
- Red Heart Super Saver Bitty Stripes or other worsted weight yarn (samples made with Rainbow Mist)
- worsted weight yarn in white
- G Crochet Hook (4.25 mm)
- Fiberfill
- 2- 10 mm Safety Eyes
- 13-mm Safety Nose
- Yarn Needle
- Stitch Markers
- Scissors
Instructions:
Bunnies are made with the body and head made in one piece and the arms, legs, ears, nose, and tail are made separately and sewn on.
All pieces begin with a magic ring and are crocheted in a continuous spiral.
If you do not want to use safety eyes and noses you can embroider them on instead.
*To make an optional weighted base for your bunny- Either cut a circle out of fabric and stitch a running stitch around the edge to cinch up to make a bowl shape, or use the toe end of a pair of nylons. Fill with PolyPellets weighted stuffing beads and close securely (cinch and stitch if using fabric, know the end and trim if using nylons). Set the weighted base in the bottom of the body then stuff as usual.
